I'm 24 and hope to have a child within the next couple of years. Here's what is on my mind: I'm quite petite.

I'm 5'1" and weight about 85 lbs. My friends (who are childless) make jokes about me being able to carry around a baby belly. One of my aunts told me how the doctor who delievered her daughter said that most women dilate to the approxzimate size of their foot. He said that a size seven usually doesn't have much problem. I'm a 5 1/2.

To get to the point.... Tell me about some of your birthing experiences. I need to hear some positive things. I wish people would stop telling me such negative things. Any petite moms here who would like to give me some advice, etc?

Well, at the end of your pregnancy and labor, you get to bring home your new baby :D And when that kid is 3 y/o and constantly insists you give him extra hugs and kisses, You know that it's all worth it :)

Thanks for the reply angeles.

I'm sure it will be worth it. :)

I'm wondering if I've let people get to me. Probably.

i dont understand that logic - i mean chances are you wont have a 10 lb 25 inch baby but theres no reason someone with a small frame cant have one at all!!

i know dita who posts here sometimes is also a peanut and she gave birth to a good sized baby.

im sure youll be fine. its all about the birthing hips which expand while you are preggo - your body adjusts to allow for certain things you know?

man all i can picture is my foot in my crotch, i had never heard that before.

if a dwarf (or is it a midget? I forget which...) can give birth to a "normal" sized baby, so can you.
My friend Ann is like a bean pole and she gave birth to a 7lb baby, with no problems at all. Your body will adjust to whatever it needs to do. Trust your body, it knows more about itself than any of your friends do.

I've never heard that a woman dilates to the size of her foot - all women dilate to about 10 cm which gives the baby plenty of room. If you are worried, talk to your doctor who will be able to reasure you. Friends have a tendancy to prepare you for the worst case scenario which isn't very helpful!

I have never heard the shoe size thing either. I weighed 90 lbs before my first and I had both of mine naturally

instant piano - i've had similar worries, as i want to one day deliver naturally - i'm 5'3" and 113.

i think we'll be fine. mother nature has ways of working her magic with a pregnant woman's body.

When I tell poeple how big my son was, their eyes get big and they say, "But you're so SMALL!!"

So yeah, even if you're petite, it can be done.

As far as the shoe size deal, in birthing classes and in dr visits, I was told you dilate to 10cm. Period. Not based on feet or anything wierd like that....
