I got beat up at the doctor's office today. I had to get my glucose test done and the drink made me sooo sick! Then I had to get my RhoGam shot too. It totally sucked and now I am at home nursing myself before we leave for vacation. :)

yikes I feel bad...I don't remember what I am.
:f
Then again I didn't pass the GD (glucose) test so that kinda overshadowed everything else. i do know I don't need rhogam.

I didn't think the drink was bad the first time, they only made me drink a small cup of it. The second test though...after fasting for almost 15 hours and then drinking a whole friggin bottle of it, I felt sick to my stomache. Plus getting poked about 6 times that day, the nurse messed up twice on my arm and left a nasty ass bruise. i wanted to kill him.

That glucose stuff is icky. I told them at least they could do it put it in a fridge or something geez.
I had to get the rhogam shot also since i am o neg. The first pregnancy i got the shot in the arm. So it was suprising the second time when I had to drop my pants to get the shot in the butt. :)

I am O negative, so I have the shot to look forward to. And the glucose stuff. Does everyone have to do that? Ick.

I believe the glucose icky stuff is part of the regular testing you go through at what 20 weeks I believe. It has been awhile. It is to check your sugar levels, and stuff. I am not sure.

oral glucose tolerance tests are usually done in the first trimester to detect whether or not the mother has gestational diabetes (or diabetes induced by pregnancy, usually due to insufficient insulin production)...

basically they shock your system with a high sugar/carbohydrate load and see how your body responds to it and is able to process the glucose... if your blood sugar is really elevated, then they'll repeat the test at another date and two or more elevated blood sugar readings is indicative of gestational diabetes...

overall, it's not a huge deal... the diabetes disappears after giving birth, but it can indicate that the mother is susceptable for diabetes later in life (type II diabetes)...

babies of diabetic women also tend to be larger in size, may have underdeveloped organs if they are preterm (especially lungs), may have problems feeding and maybe listless & limp within a few hours of delievery, due to low blood sugar...

sorry to go on and on... i've just finished learning all about this in my nursing program and find it pretty interesting...

that's weird, they didn't do my test until I was 28 weeks preggers.
Yeah GD sucks, you have to go on a diet with NO sugar (seriously...I had to quit drinking milk becuase it has sugar in it!) and very low carbs. I keep it under controll with diet (and moderate exercise) alone, but sometimes, some preggers have to take insulin shots several times a day to keep there blood sugar in check.
I was put in a hard spot with this, due to previous back injuries my doctors suggested that i don't do ANY type of exercise and that i lay on my left side for at least three hours a day. Try doing that without snacking out and being BORED out of your mind. It wasn't a big shock that I developed GD, and gained more than 35 lbs. The first week they suspected i had GD I actually gained 20lbs. AND they were talking about putting me on bedrest becuase they thought I had preclampsia (turns out the nurse that was checking my blood pressure was screwing up)! Pretty scary stuff! I can't wait to get my body back though, and I hope and pray that my next pregnancy goes a bit easier than this one.
