Just from seeing it several times while reading, I understand that it has something to do with (I think) quoting something someone said verbatim, mistakes and all. I always see it after a word is misspelled. Is this the only time it's used? Is it short for something? How/where did it originate?

Thanks smart people. ;s

it means that what you typed was transcribed literally and intentionally, errors and all. Sic is latin for thus.

Our student shorthand for remembering that term in junior high was Spelled InCorrectly. I've never forgotten it! I always think that everytime I come across it in a quote.

I always thought it was "stated in context"
