Does it matter what your needles are made out of? Any opinions?

BEGINNER HERE!!!!

I have only used plastic and aluminum. I like them both, the plastic ones give a little bit more though, which is helpful for me sometimes.

My roommate has aluminum, plastic and wood. Her faves are the wooden ones. They cost a little more and I'm not going to invest just yet.

I haven't even gotten to circular needles yet.

Just the plain ol' regular kind.

I don't like aluminum, they make my hands hurt and are too slippery.

Plastic are okay.

I like wooden (particularly Brittany, which are made of birch) and resin, which are what my Denises are made of. They warm to the hands and don't make your wrists hurt like aluminums do.

Honestly, Marley, and everyone else, it's very difficult to make needle suggestions because everyone likes different things. I know a lot of new knitters (and I'm still one, just for the record) prefer bigger needles for scarves. Like US13 or more. I think the largest ones I've ever used were 10.5 and they felt huge to me :p

Unlike most people I prefer aluminium to plastic. I won a bunch of needles on Ebay a while ago and I have a few wooden ones, but I've never had a chance to try them.

And I really NEED a set of Denises.

even those recommended sizes are just for gauge, if you knit tighter or looser, you might have to go up or down a size to meet gauge. Grab a pattern, knit a swatch, and adjust from there. :)

OK, do any of you buy needles online? I'm putting together a Christmas list!
