Very nice work Kat :)
I especially like the photo of the little curly-haired girl, and the second photo of the horse show. I have a very similar one to your second nature walk photo, too!

Very professional stuff, Katz. Nice compositions and DOFs! I agree with my wife, that picture of the little girl is adorable...nice choice of colorization...DOF is great, too. It's good to see another that can pull out the art form that photography is. I now see why you have a photo business ;)

I really like how you're very good with your composition....it can make or break an exposure.

katz

Thank you :) The little girl photo was taken at the local Ottawa Greek Fest. I tried for nearly an hour to get a nice "portrait" type image of her, without her face. I try not to get too many little ones faces.. you never know how the parent will react. The first horse show photo, the more I look at it, the more it bothers me.. The whites are too blown. It was a diffulcult day, the lighting was changing so quickly with cloud cover. I'll have to check through a few of the other horse show photos I whipped up and see if there is something else to show.

The colourization of the little girl photo, is through a Photoshop action my husband created for me. Argentotype Rust. I have a few of them, to simulate darkroom effects and printing techniques. I usually forget I have them, and I tried EVERYTHING with that little girl photo to find its.. sparkle I guess. So I started messing with the filter actions and bammo! there it was.

Argentotype Brown
Agerntotype Rust
Cyanotype
Palladiotype

If anyone is interested in these actions, I'd be happy to pass them along. They work in Photoshop 7 & CS. I can't guarentee anything lower than 7 though.

Dave

Do you dabble with lens filters?

katz
10-06-2004, 06:53 PM
Not a single one*L* I have some for my old Nikon.. Nothing special.. I think erm, a star effect for light points, and a mirror reflection. I guess they would work on my Canon, never really tried*L* Maybe I will this weekend-lol- It's honestly something I never thought about, as you can do most of your filter effects in Photoshop. Most of my camera money is in the "new one" + "macro lens" pools*L*

This one was actually done with the little Olympus 2.5 mp. I don't have a macro for my Canon sadly :(

Dave

It still qualifies as a macro...and that's a really damn good shot for that little camera :)
I think it has something to do with the photographer ;)

katz

well the olympus has a macro setting. that's the only reason why it's still around. it's faboo for that. someday... i'll have a macro for the canon*L*

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v479/miaouphoto/snowcreek.jpg

This was taken in the park near my apartment building. I took it last December, mid month. It was a bit of a magical snow that evening. It had snowed really hard late night, and because it was 1am, the snow was undisturbed. We had decided to go out for a walk, and I was fussing that I should have brought the camera. After the walk I ran upstairs and got the equipment, and went out for another hour or so. The snowy creek is a well known creek here in Ottawa, I took the image from the foot bridge that crosses it. It's amazing how night, and some snow will make things beautiful. The creek normally is a trash collecting puddle..

The pond is in the same park. The duckies are lining the edge of the pond. They stay year round for the chow.

those are awesome Becka! And, yea, knowing exactly which creek you're talking about, you've managed to make it look beautiful and untouched. miracle!!

i've gotta say Becks, you've always had a good eye, but I've definitely seen you improving and honing your skills since I first saw your stuff a couple years ago. Good for you, and keep up the good work! And in the meantime I'll try not to turn green with envy ;)

for the most part i haven't been updating it. i've been doing selective series or photoclub entries posts. i figure in the theme of the more random photosharing pictures to dig this relic up.

As of right now I have 82 "keepers", and I've decided to not do at least 4 of them already out of the 425 photos taken yesterday.

Curious seeing as we talked about it, but what did they say about your use of selective color? Did it detract or add or was it even an issue?

Congrats! :)

katz
02-01-2006, 11:26 AM
they LOVED the selective colour, however i did have to mention to them that it wasn't a black and white *L* that makes me giggle. i shoudl change the one i put in the post to the version i used for yesterday, it's a bit different.

they thought the photograph of tania was too "soft". and it's like well yeah, it has a soft focus on it. apparently i needed more mist!

**edit** i replaced the Remember image with the one i used in the comp. The brolly is not as harsh, the tones a bit better.

Not mine but here are some old photos I'm working on. These were quick & dirty edits. Once I have the "large scans of 4-6 images" broken out into individual photographs (22 more to break up!) I will spend quite a bit of time editing them. Well 22 more to break up that I've scanned. I still have about 600 photographs to scan.

The age range of photographs that I'm scanning and working on goes from 21-100+ years. My family has tons of old family photographs floating around that need to be digitally archived before they turn to dust and it seems that the job has fallen into my lap. Which is ok with me, because I've learned a lot about my parents when they were my age in the past 48 hours.

That ice rink looks like fun!

Also, I really like the horse leaping picture- I like that the horse is jumping into the frame, and the patterning of the barrier at the bottom is nice.

katz
02-28-2006, 11:42 PM
it was a bust for both images. i should have cropped both tighter. they were both the lowest scoring prints i have recieved anywhere.

for the dressage photo - they didn't like the fact that the horse was moving away from the camera - can't see the eyes. i suppose i submitted this photo as i see it as being a dressage rider myself. this is the type of photo i would love to have of myself and my horse. shows the strength of the hind end (the "engine" of the horse), good topline through the neck (the curve) as well as good equitation of the rider.-shrugs-

i had some pretty serious issues with the competition entirely this evening. one of the judges is pretty high end in his work and essentially competing in the lowest level at the club. to me that's unhighly unfair to those new to the club and competitions/photography in general. he scored first and second in that level. which brings another irk point up for me. there are 3 judges that change with each competition. if you're a judge and have an entry, someone else that has been a judge in the past will step in and mark the photo instead so that it's "fair". i personally believe you shouldn't have an entry in the competition period if you are a judge of that competition.

My first whirl using my studio lights. I had some serious white balance issues as well as a very over warm model. I have very little doubt I'll place with it, but I'm hoping that the poor weather combined with how very few Juniors have studio access or studio lighting will lower the number of entries in my ranking *L* Evil of me to think that? Yes.

I LOVE the photo with the 3 deer in it. It's kinda creepy, which I like, as if the deer are coming out of hiding and stalking something. Actually, it reminds me of that scene in The Ring 2 *ha*. And I also love that tree photo with the super saturated blue sky. Love the colours and composition.

The file is clean, however if you're squidgey about running exe files or whatever don't, or run your virus checker against it for your peace of mind :)

I read it as an EXE, which you can't run under OSX.

katz

the original file was an EXE, but i tried to convert it to a avi file, which i did.. but due to me having no idea what i was doign when making the exe, used too big of pictures.. thus creating a 700mb avi *L*

i am going to tinker this weekend and trim down the images so i can make an avi with it*L*

Where'd you go to do the "sky and clouds" stuff? There are some good captures there -- especially the second, in which you can see the two layers of clouds forming an "air sandwich." Also, I like your photos of the rushes and cattails from the first set. :)

katz

Those sky and clouds are from when I went to Michigan for Easter. There was an "air" sandwich that I would have loved to have snapped but they had called the no electronic devices. It was as I was landing at Metro, the sun was setting we came down through the top layer and we were between the really textured clouds that were raining down on Detroit and the whipped potato clouds above us, the entire sky/clouds was bathed in gold and peach colours. If one could describe heaven it was probably that one moment for me.

OOOOH I love looking at other people's gear. *geek*

How are you liking that MiniTrekker? It looks like it'll hold a ton. I'm still trying to decide between their CompuTrekker or the Tamrac Cyberpak for when I have to go to shoots or take it as a carry-on.

katz
05-20-2006, 07:23 AM
it holds quite a bit. it's snug getting them all in there and usually works better leaving one out in hand *L* i carry my HP usually in my purse or pocket.

the mini trekker is an all weather one, so it has the rain bag attached to it. haven't used it yet, but today might be THAT day -eyes the window-
http://www.lowepro.com/Products/Backpacks/allWeather/Mini_Trekker_AW.aspx

we're heading out to some good trails etc for the photo club. we were to go last week, but it was HIDEOUS on saturday so we called rain day. well our rain day? it's still freaking raining. all week we're were under 70% showers, never rained till night time.. . today? pissing it down. something tells me while having a rainy day for the scavenger hunt last fall was fun, that this time tromping around in the rain will be less so. i think the availability of Tim Horton's in the area has a lot to do with it *L*

Most of their backpacks include AW protection I think. The CompuTrekkers have it too... though I really don't do much shooting where there's a chance of my gear getting wet.

I'm just afraid of getting it and not having it carry everything I want. Normally if I take the Minolta on a shoot, it goes in a separate bag so I don't grab the wrong lenses. You've made me feel better. ;) Most people think one person couldn't possibly use 4 SLRs at once... and now I'm looking into a Yashica. ;l

katz
05-20-2006, 04:20 PM
i have to add there is a nikon lens missing. i don't have my 70-300 in there, but with some trickery.. it DOES fit -lol- i just couldn't be bothered that day as i figured if i want zoom i had the canon there *L*

and yeah most of their backpacks come with AW, you just have to make sure you grab the one that says it as there is the plain variety and then the AW. Plus i think the AW mini trekker has better pockets and over all is more sexier than the regular one
http://www.lowepro.com/Products/Backpacks/classic/Mini_Trekker_Classic.aspx

today's outing was VERY wet. i did get some fun pictures though as well as some really nice ones. i'll be posting some later tonight i hope. i had my first uncomfy pregnant experience as well, the trail was longer than i thought and someone was quite insistent that they needed to push as hard as they could on my bladder. i feel very bruised inside, i thought i was going to die walking back to the car -lol- i had left everyone behind me by a good 30 feet or more. there was a portajohn at the trail entrance and come hell or high water no one was getting in my way. i got there.. AND THE DAMN THING WAS LOCKED. thankfully with a stick i wiggled the lock open and was able to not die *L*

for now however, i believe it's naptime *L*

I'm not. It hasn't been a good weather week for me. A few days ago, I got caught in a freak thunderstorm (in my car) in which I was pelted with hail and was about 15 metres away from a lightning strike. Today was a trip to Collingwood -- up by Georgian Bay at the edge of Lake Huron. There's a place there at the top of the Blue Mountains that we were going to visit. No such luck. Wet snow. So we called the expedition off and went to see Over the Hedge instead.

Did you know that there's a town called Nottawa in southern Ontario?

katz
05-22-2006, 12:20 AM
crikey! it's been super shite here for weather all week too. the threat of rain kept me in most of the week because i didn't want to get caught out photographing in it.. of course it stayed cloudy during the day rained at night. i know however if i left the house to do anything it's piss down on me so meh.

but holy moly the snow? no thank you *L*i know it gets colder up there on the Bay *L* but eef.. We're heading up to Midland in the next month or so. I can say if it snows while i'm there i'll be mighty irritated *L* i'm ready for a bit dryer spell here for a bit..

how was over the hedge? and no i didn't know there was a Nottawa *L*

ej
05-22-2006, 12:27 AM
The snow was totally a freak thing. It was very windy and cold today -- probably below freezing with the wind blowing off the lake.

Over the Hedge is funny shit. The kids thought it was pretty good. Something for everyone. It's not as clever as some of the other animated movies that have been released in the past few years, but I don't think it takes itself as seriously, either. You should check it out if you get a chance.

I'm a big fan of the Delta 400 for its wide exposure latitude. But it's really hard to go wrong with Ilford's films. Honestly, I love them because they're cheaper than Kodak for me, and yet just as good (if not better in some cases). HP5+ is their classic. You might like to try the Pan F+. It's ISO50, but I have successfully pushed to ISO100 without too much grain development.

So it's not fungus :/ I know some lenses do tend to have problems at their extremes, but I've never actually seen something that pronounced. Has it always done that? I really don't know enough about the inner workings of lenses to say exactly what's going on there. Is there someone you can take it to to have it looked over?

katz
07-02-2006, 06:41 PM
it's not always done it, i started to notice it last fall though at a dressage comp i shot. it wasn't as bad as this though. kev still thinks it's a humidity problem.. but if it was that, all my "mid zoom" shots would be screwed up as well

courey
07-02-2006, 07:01 PM
Could... I'm not sure. I guess it would depend on which end of the lens the element is on, and like I said, I've no clue how they're built. You should get it checked out when ya' can!

katz
07-02-2006, 07:07 PM
there's a couple of places, henrys, ginn etc

i'm finally almost finished with my lubitel roll-lol- it's only been since february

and another roll of holga.. so when those are done i can take the lens down to henry's as see what they say.

who knows, maybe it's something to do with my 20d? the dressage comp photos were done on the d30, but it wasn't as bad as the 20d. possibly the glass has become flawed or something. can that happen without dropping/banging it about?

Whats the specs on the 70-300? I've got a friend I can talk to about lens problems. What kind, etc?

katz
07-10-2006, 12:08 PM
Canon EF 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 IS

It is one of the first lenses I guess for their DSLRs because we got it when we got the D30 back in 2001. I hadn't used it much last year so I can't quite pinpoint when it started. I did notice a bit of the "dragon boat" effect at a dressage show in the fall but it was nothing like the picture I already have shown. I'll have a peek this morning and see if I can find some that may show a decline in quality.

Is this South Keys Bus station? I used to live in that area.

I love your pictures. You are so talented.

Always wanted to get into photography myself but I don't have a proper camera. Just the plain ole point and shoot digi cam. Just can't afford something better [blue] So I will have to live vicariously through all the great pictures I have seen in this section. :f

Nightrose it most absolutely IS the SK bus station *L*

I used to live up off Bridlepath at the Atriums :)

and Courey is right, you can do a lot with a point and shoot. My second in command camera is a tiny little HP that I tote everywhere with me. It's not the greatest camera, but now that I've figured out it's weak and strong points, I can get some fantastic shots with it.

I used to live outside the military base on Downpatrick and I worked at the Towngate Shopping Centre at Buck Or Two (when it was on the side with Produce Depot) before it closed and then reopened on the other side. That is so weird.

Yeah my camera is one my hubby won through work 4 years ago. It is only a 2 Megapixel camera but pretty good at taking family pics and such. I have my heart set on getting a new one soon. Hopefully a 5 megapixel cam. I saw a camera at Future Shop once that was $900 that had different leses. I guess it was a Digital SLR. I don't know much about camera names and such and it has been years since I took a photography course so I don't remember much about light exposures and times. The camera was so out of my league but I kept thinking if I had a camera like that I could learn as I went and experiment with it. Hubby wouldn't go for it though. Said maybe later on when we had more money. Ah but to dream.

Right now I am having fun taking pics of myself with the time feature on our camera. I recently discovered it had it sad but true. I have given the camera to our son to use as well and he takes pretty good shots himself. I think I have a photographer in-training. [post83]

the first one i had JUST woke up, was stumbling down the stairs and he was crawling across my den floor. my first reaction was OHMYFUCKBIGSPIDER then i was like beeee! get the beeeee! so husband got to kill that one as i was practically hyperventilating on the stairs. the dog found the second in the entry way, i cupped him wiht a glass. hubs then got to go around checking outside and whatnot for nests on the house etc. it's too cold in here for them to do much other than crawl. buddy sure woke up when i cupped him with the glass though and took the cold air off him.

dunno how they got in. 1 bee is chance, 2 bees is like hrmmm - but there is no spots where they could get in. kev DID get stung this afternoon though while mowing the lawn. i think he should have killed that second bee ;K

well we kinda dropped the ball on this one in the past few weeks.

kev and i both submitted images as we were allowed up to 5 per person. i just wish dutchess had been in a bit better mood today, she seems to get super sulky lately when the camera comes out. even bribing her didn't help my cause in getting some fun non run of the mill shots, so i had to resort to older photos. meh.

we had to include a blurb about our subject. mine was pretty safe, kev's were a bit more descriptive of our dog -lol-

http://www.dreaminginreality.com/images/ry1.jpg
Dutchess is a 7 year old Dalmatian who enjoys napping, going for walks, playing with her humans & her squeaky toys.

Dutchess doesn't 'smile' often, but when the grass isn't too long to dampen her spirits (or her prissy little dog feet) she rewards us with one, like in this photo.

now however i do have my own studio stuff (background holder, light/brolly/stand etc) but no willing victims models. i THINK a page or two back there was one of a girl against a black background, that one was done with my current set up.

Photo club competition submissions end tomorrow for the first of the season. We are allowed three entries this year with at least 1 of them being Topical. The topics for competition are as follows.

Nature (easy peasy)
The image should show the natural world, without the Hand of Man in evidence directly or by implication. Images with e.g., domesticated animals, commonly cultivated plants, a fence or utility pole, etc., will not be included in the Nature on-topic category.
At the Market (just gotta go to the market!)
Big or small, in the city, in small places or in foreign places, markets offer many opportunities for pictures and teach us a lot about local culture and habits. Generally outdoors, open market type areas within shopping malls are acceptable; flea markets, sidewalk sales and large craft sales are acceptable. Garage sales, stores and shopping mall hallways fall outside the topic.

Wheels (need to find some interesting wheels)
Wheels are everywhere in our world. Your image must show one or several wheels or portions of wheels. Pulleys, casters and gears are acceptable.

In My Neighbourhood
Details to be published
Friendship (easily done!)
An alien from outer space asks you to define “friendship” with a single image. It can be between children, seniors, a person and a dog, a group of teenagers. Emotion must be present in your image.

Faces and Figures (bleh.. god help me)
Your entry should be a photographic portrait which is a representation of a living person, especially the face, or a photograph in which the subject, the human body, is the primary interest
Note: Entries are limited to posed photographs of one or more human beings. The backgrounds may include statues or paintings of people, providing these are not the primary subject.
Petand animal portraits are excluded.

my Owl got me a ribbon with 24 points! so that helps me move slowly towards Intermediate as well as counts towards my senior ranking once i'm ready to move out of intermediate.

the other two missed getting my ass out of junior by a point or two (needed 21). If I remember correctly the waterfall got me 20 and the Trillium got me 19.

Here are some highlights from the scavenger hunt. There was a list of 26 things (one item for each letter of the alphabet)

Things were a bit sparse up in Gatineau this weekend, a good hard rain and/or some wind in the next few days will probably knock out what has changed/started to. There is still a bit of green. I hope it hangs in there till next Monday or so, my dad is in town and I wanted him to see! Damn early colour peak!

Damn early colour peak!

Funny you should say that. Because that is what I was saying this year as well. We got married in October 2005 and we picked October because usually by Thanksgiving most of the leaves are off the trees so the first of the month is always colourful. Well wouldn't you know it but last year hardly any trees had changed and there went my whole fall colour in the background to my wedding pics. But then this year everything was changing by the end of September and the leaves look all pretty :s

I had emailed Scorelladium Placentre about their camera use policy. They don't allow SLRs for the Sens games but everything else is "per event". The Horse people allow flash photography, and I had front row on the floor (3 feet from the ring) seats and I wanted to do some photoz. However Asshats in Kanata never emailed me back, so I just took my wee HP and hoped for the best.

All said and done, I didn't do too badly. They're not ZOMG amazing, but for such a shitty little camera they came out really well *L*

OMG those are gorgeous pictures of your son. I love them. You are so lucky to be able to do that. Most of us have to spend a fortune to have pics like that taken. All the pics of my son are blurry when he was a baby which is so sad. I am so glad that camera is gone. I am excited to have baby #2 to to practice my photography more.

Your son is absolutely precious. Thanks so much for sharing those with us. Such wonderful keepsakes.

I do have a couple of questions though. How do you make a mock studio? Are you using a tripod or just your hands? Thanks again for sharing [post67]

for those photos there i hand held

for my "mock studio" i have several things available to me, some is honest to good photo equip, some is not.

i have a background holder/stand however my backgrounds are king size sheets.

I have a single studio lamp with 3 halogen bulbs that have variable settings as far as turning 1, 2, or 3 lights on at the same time with brightness intensity sliders. However for this shoot I used a halogen shop lamp with a reflector umbrella behind it and my IKEA lamp with the cover removed. Lower to the ground :)

I also have an external flash unit that I used to light the scene. It does the job but I'm looking for one that swivels so that I can bounce light off the ceiling while shooting portrait orientation.

I do have a tripod that I use a lot, but sometimes it doesn't work because it only goes "so low". It will fold out near to the ground but i have to remove the center pole and extender and well.. both the husband and I have no idea where the allen key is for that.

They're at the Civilization Museum in Hull (right across the river there).

I found them quite by accident as they're inside the main lobby but on what I guess is the "front side" that faces the river. I hardly ever go there as the entrance to the main part of the museum is on the "back side". They were taken with the 70-300mm with me standing/laying on the floor pretty far back.

These are private on flickr mostly because I have fellow photo club members on my contacts list etc and are still to be judged for competition (can't lose whatever OMG WOW factor they may have). These were taken for the club's fall challenge held at Foręt-la-Blanche in Mayo Quebec. Every year the club holds the challenge, it's a 12 hour shoot. You shoot as much as you can, then take your 8 best of the day to submit to the challenge. Each photo is scored individually, and there are high scoring images awareded (1/2/Hon. Mention) however whoever has the highest scoring set wins the trophy to display on their mantel for a year.

While these are my 8 best from the day, I don't think they're some of my best photos. I rushed to get there for sunrise and it was a pretty sad sunrise combined with the poor colour of the leaves, left me feeling pretty uninspired for the day. I just wasn't feeling the love and to me it shows.

The howling was definitely eerie but so wonderful to have the chance to hear. Their escaped buddy was hanging out in the woods next to the enclosure, the park was letting him have his "day out" because it was too hard to track him and shoo him back into his area with all the visitors. We saw him several times when driving by their area.

Ottawa -lol- we have plenty of coyote and Timber wolves but not Arctics. These were taken at a nature park in Quebec called Parc Omega (about an hour from me). It's a good deal as far as paid outings go, it cost us $13 to get in and we were there for 6 hours.

http://www.parc-omega.com/

The loss of rack was natural shedding. Yesterday lent itself to many things that people usually don't see including the loose wolf, an actual "wild" coyote, the rack shedding.
