View Full Version : Photography contest

I did some work on the zuga.net servers and in return Gary Bernstein sent me a copy of his glamour photography book and 2 copies of their "How to take great pictures" DVD, which is supposed to have tips and tricks from some prominent photographers.
The DVDs are still in their wrappers, unwatched.
If you want to participate, all you have to do is submit a photo here. It's probably better if you can upload the picture somewhere and link it as I cannot change the size limitations of attachments without affecting the entire forum.
As a prize, I will give one of the two copies I have. I will be the sole judge of this competition, and the only criteria I will use for judging is which picture I think is the best.
Content of the picture is your choice, and will not affect my judgement. I am not going to try to lay claim on any copyrights to the pics, either. They're all yours and I don't have the time nor desire to fool with that.
If you win, you will have to give me an address that I can ship this to, so keep that in mind.
Thanks,
Martin
Damn, Martin, that's really nice of you. An actual photography forum contest where there's an actual physical price :p
So, no theme, eh?
Hmmm....
I'll definitely have to take more pictures.
So what's the deadline for this?
edit: oh, also, what about digital alterations? Only bordering allowed, etc?
i know another photography forum that specilizes only in photography has this rule about digital manipulation
1. All images posted must be the work of the author posting. Any digitally enhanced work will be accepted providing the original source image / images is the work of the author.
This takes into effect that Photoshop and other editing programs are essentially the digital photographer's darkroom.
Also, Martin.. What is the rule on nudity? Does the OIT sticky apply here as well? Or are we given a bit of creative rein?
As far as nudity is concerned, it's the same exact rule as when applied to OIT. elisantics, Zara and myself are just about done with the Guidelines sticky.

No rule on photoshopping. PS the fark out if if you want. The only thing I will judge on is what I like best.

Excellent, thanks. :)
For what time zone, exactly :p
lol, just kidding.
Is it safe to assume that
1) We're all waiting to see what kind of photos we're up against
or
2) At some point close to the deadline we'll all start rummaging through old photos to find a possible winner
(?)
;)
Well, in post number 7, Martin says that we can submit 3 pics max, so here is my first submission (yes, you've seen it, but I figured, why not?):

2 more submissions to go.

should we have a thread just for the submissions?
I was thinking about that earlier. That way there's no talk and just presentation. How would you work it, though, lock it out? I mean, are we to email you each of our submissions and then you'll create a post for each user and then edit each user's post whenever we submit a photo? I think that sounds good....too much work for you?
How do you want to do it?
Or we could do that [post18]
I tend to make things more difficult than they actually have to be....mountain out of a mole hill kind of mentality.
Do you prefer underexposure or overexposure ;)
I'm cheating. I'm a born and raised Yankee living in the South :D
rinkydink....with your first submission....I believe you've won ;) Wow!

I just put one up. If it's too heavy, let me know and I can replace it with a lighter version. It's apparently lighter than rinkydink's but seems to be taking longer to load (or maybe it's just my slow connection...)
*edit* Never mind, I think it is too big. I'll repost it tomorrow afternoon.
I really like that first submission of yours, Ann....excellent composition! As for the size thing, it's odd, but when I right click on the picture it doesn't even list the file extension or the image size. Is it a .bmp? Might want to convert it to a .jpg. I dunno, that is odd.
But there's always that "What if...?" What if you won? Then you'd have to give Martin your addy. And as far as being out of your league....hell, I'm out of my league. I'm a damn newbie when it comes to photography and my pic looks like crap when compared to what's been submitted. I pretty much know I won't win, either, but I'm also still going to submit.
You never know...you could win.

I noticed that about the file size too and thought it was strange (they are both .jpgs, by the way). But my hard drive shows them as 84kb and 37kb, so I think they're okay now size-wise. Thanks for the compliment. :) Your picture isn't crap... I was pretty impressed with it, actually.
Clunky, what are you talking about? ;) I saw your photo thread. You can definitely compete! Get some photos in here!
Basic to whom?
We all have our quirks about our own stuff :)
Will there be titles given out...like, best attempt at taking a picture, or, worst entry, or, honourable mention? lol
If there is I might enter because I like my photo but its not artistic. I think it just captures the subject doing what he does. Its a silly photo, but I'm not good at photography at all, I just took it on my normal camera, on a normal day! I know only one person gets a prize, but maybe there could be titles. :D Ok, I'm rambling. I don't know whether to enter it or not.

Oh enter, Abi... it's all in fun! Personally, I just like seeing what photos people cherish the most of their own work, and they give me ideas to play off of. :)
Enter!
Ok, I'm gonna post it :)
Eeek...I did it! heh! Its bigger than everyone elses. Did I mention I was an amateur? At least I can say I tried. :)

He's definitely *some pig*! [post67]
I like his fat wrinkly face!
Heh! I know its not the type of picture I was meant to post, but I'm excited because its possibly the first picture I have ever taken without a finger infront of the lens or overexposed...even though the colour is a bit washed out!

Only a few hours left if you have anything you want to submit. Good jobs by everyone so far.
