Mental Illness

My fiance and I aren't planning on having children anytime soon, but something has me worried about that time. My fiance's paternal aunt is schizophrenic, and I've been trying to find some information on this illness related to genetics, but I'm not really getting a straight answer. It worries me because I know many mental illnesses skip a generation, does anyone know if the mother or father is a carrier for this? Does anyone else have a mate with a family history of mental illness?

This is what I've learned from many psych classes so you can take it as you want. Schizophrenia tends to run in families. It really doesn't matter which side you get it from. You are more apt to develop shizophrenia if your parents suffer from it. I really don't know much about extended family's and the risk of development though.
