I don't really know what kind of music your into.. do you want stuff that is as 'normal' as possible and Tori-like or do you rather have her weirdest stuff?

Anyway, if I'm looking at what I see at Napster right now you might pick some of these these, I will try to describe them a bit:

Wuthering Heights (a classic from her debut album)
Running Up That Hill (a classic from her fifth album)
Hounds Of Love (high energy dynamic song with a lot of percussion)
Under Ice (cool scary song with cellos)
Watching You Without Me (Tori's fav)
Hello Earth (weird stuff with Irish choir)
Jig Of Life (weirder stuff with Scottish violins)

I hope you will like her, her voice is just so amazing!

ok.... i could only find about 5 songs this morning on napster... yes, only 5!! :n
i got Wuthering Heights (pretty cool... it grew on me), Running up that Hill (this one's ok), and Babooshka (ummm.. yuck :g)
i think i'll try more later. already i can tell though that i probably won't become obsessed with her like i am with tori.
:O

mmmmm......

hearing babooshka and running up that hill as one of kate's first songs is like just listening to: happy phantom and hotel by tori... they are beautiful songs, but not the kind of songs that i would put in a conversion tape...
Get moving if you can, that is the kate conversion song IMHO
:P

Well, I downloaded a bunch off of Napster-- And to this day-- myt favorite Kate Bush song is actaully a B-Side tat I found... "Be Kind to My Mistakes".

I'd also recommend "Sat in Your Lap". There's a line where Kate Bush says... "Just when I think I'm king.... I must admit!" But I swear she's actually singing "Just when I think I'm king... I masturbate!" Listen-- you'll laugh.

She's very good.

I'm also acquainting myself with her music; I've checked out Hounds of Love and The Sensual World from the library. From what I've heard thus far, I'd recommend Cloudbusting, And Dream of Sheep, Jig of Life and This Woman's Work.

I actually just finished taping a Kate convertion tape to a friend of mine. She hadn't heard any Kate at all and the task was very difficult for me since I have been listening to Kate a lot (she is my biggest favourite among Tori, Nick Cave and Björk). I wanted to give this friend a look at Kate's career and here are songs I taped:

-Wuthering Heights
-Kick Inside
-Symphony in Blue
-Oh England My Lionheart
-Suspended in Gaffa
-The Night of the swallow
-Hounds Of Love
-Cloudbusting
-And Dream Of Sheep
-Under The Ivy
-The Fog
-Deeper Understanding
-This Woman's Work
-Eat The Music
-Moments Of Pleasure

I am not totally happy with the list but at least I got some songs from each album.

Good luck in finding your way to Kate's music:)

Oh, of course I taped songs from Never For Ever as well! They were Babooshka, Infant Kiss and Army Dreamers. Breathing is also fantastic:)

i d/led Hello Earth, This Woman's Work, and Rubberband Girl last night and listened to them this morning. i don't really like any of them.
i can see how to some people she'd be like another Tori, but i don't think i want another tori.
maybe she'll grow on me.
"running up that hill" and "wuthering heights" are still really cool though.

i'm still looking for those songs that people have been suggesting like Moving, Suspended in Gaffa, Get Out of this House, The Sensual World, and those *scary* songs Waking the Witch, Hammer Horror, Wedding List, Egypt....
but NO ONE has them on napster.... blargh ;r

"i can see how to some people she'd be like another Tori, but i don't think i want another tori. "

I think you misunderstood (or maybe I'm misunderstanding you?) Kate came first, and people say Tori is another KATE. I disagree, although their vocal styles are similar (well were, Tori on LE sounds like Kate a weensy bit, but beyond that I don't hear it...I could go on but I won't)

See-- I see Tori as another Kate--- but that doesn't mean that they SOUND alike. Truth is-- neither one of them was ever truly in the mainstream. Both of them write bizarre cryptic lyrics taht often are beyond comprehension at first glance. They're artistic singer-songwriters that do thing the mainstream will NEVER understand. So, when I compare the two-- I can totally see why Tori like Kate Bush. I can see the influence there. But I also recognie that they don't necessarily sound similar.

yeah i think you misunderstood.

i wasn't saying that Kate came second... i know she's been around since the '70s ... (i could tell from those outdated synths in WH and RUTH)...

anyway, i think i might buy THE HOUNDS OF LOVE sometime this week or next.
what do you guys think?

btw... i also d/led Breathing, Cloudbusting, and Under Ice... they're all pretty good... i think they could grow on me though.
those will be the last mp3s i get though.... Napster really has a limited selection of Kate songs... :O
and i really wanted to hear Get Out of This House...

Hey blackdove, go ahead and give Hounds a try. It's a good first choice. I've been listening to Kate since the 70s and I love all her stuff, but for somebody listening to some of her old music for the first time it can sound very dated. Hounds is not too ancient (1985) but I suggest getting the remastered version if you can.

Hope you like it.

It's funny people saying Hounds.. is the easiest album to get into, as I never took to it the way I did to all the others. I even prefer The Red Shoes to it, which I know alot of people thought was patchy.

The Kick Inside (all of it) is essential, and I'm very fond of The Dreaming too. How can people not like Babooshka?? It's a wonderful little tale.;)

The kick inside is a good one to start with
the first i got was hounds of love, i didn't know any kate songs, hadn't heard any, but tori had said it was a good album so i thought i'd give it a try
I got the album and hated it... But some songs started growing on me, jig of life was the first
Not liking the cd too much, one day I got the kcik inside, and loved it... It was the first kate album I loved Then i got the dreaming which was hard to listen
I now love all of her albums, but it was hard for me to get used to some... though i could not stop listening to her music
