I don't post too much, but I lurk often.
Kalia LeeAnn's Birth Story
On Monday I went to my OB to be checked. I was 5 cms. I was scheduled to be induced on that Thursday if I didn't go into labor on my own because of gestional diabetes. I let him strip my membranes to see if it would get labor going. I was really scared of being induced because I wanted a med free birth- so striping the membranes seemed like the best option. I went home and hoped that labor would start. I decided to cook dinner and go on like normal- then I started having some contractions that were stronger than the BH's that I had been having the past few weeks. I tried to pay little attention to them and figured that when I was in labor I would *know* I was in labor. Randy, Manoa and I ate dinner and hung out the rest of the evening. As the night progressed I was sure I was in early labor, but the contractions were very inconsistant- like every 6 minutes, then 10 minutes, then 5....etc. So at about one o'clock we decided to go to bed and see what happens. I layed down in bed, gave Manoa kisses and made peace with the fact that he wasn't going to be my youngest baby anymore and I went to sleep.
While sleeping I would be awakened every now and then by a contraction but I was able to fall right back to sleep. It was about 3-3:30 am that I could no longer sleep in between contractions, I was definitely in labor. I tried laying in bed as long as possible and breathing through each one. I kept repeating "open" in my head. At about 6:00am I could no longer breath through the contractions. I was moaning through them and since I didn't want to wake Manoa I decided to go downstairs. I told Randy to stay in bed with Manoa and if I needed him I would let him know. I had a few really hard contractions while downstairs and I *knew* it was time to start getting ready to go the the hospital. I went upstairs and told Randy to call my mom to come over and watch Manoa because it was time to go.
My mom arrived at our house probably 15 minutes later. She was absolutely frantic and she kept telling Randy to get me to the hospital- the contractions are too close! We both had to try and calm her down- she was crazy from seeing me in such hard labor, she even yelled at Randy because he wasn't moving quick enough for her! I had no idea how close the contractions were coming until we got into the car and started driving. I realized then that they were about 2-3 minutes apart and VERY strong. My water hadn't broken yet, and in between ctx Randy and I were even joking about how crazy my mom was being.
We arrived at the hospital at about 7:10am. I got out of the car and into a wheel chair at the emergency room entrance and waited for Randy to park the car and for a L&D nurse to come get me. It seemed like it was taking forever. When she finally arrived I think she realized that I was in very active labor and she hurried us up to L&D. When we got into the room I put on the gown and she checked me. She didn't say anything- so I asked "how many cm's am I?" I couldn't believe it when she said I was completely dialated! Everything went into full swing then. All sorts of nurses were rushing in and setting up stuff for the delivery. They had to page the doctor that was on call to come and deliver me. When she walked in, she checked me and said ' I'm going to break your water and then you're going to have this baby- 2 pushes'. Well it took about 10 good pushes, but at 7:49am Kalia LeeAnn made her entrance into this world. We didn't know if she was a boy or girl and I'm so glad we didn't find out. I love the memory I have of Randy exclaiming " We have a girl!!" Her cord was around her neck as she was being born and she didn't cry right away. Randy cut her cord and they whisked her over to the table and tried to get her to breath. It took about 30 seconds and I heard a beautiful little cry. Once they weighed her and footprinted her they gave her back to me. I nursed her right away and she latched on with hardly any help.
I have felt really great. I don't feel like I just had a baby. I had no tearing and no episiotomy- so I don't even feel sore. I feel really thankful for that. Kalia has been a wonderful baby and we are so blessed to have her. Manoa is adjusting pretty well and we have been trying extra hard to praise him for being such a great big brother. All in all, I think I had a wonderful experience having a med free hospital birth. I know it doesn't always go that way for everyone and I feel very lucky that everything ended up the way it did.
