Hello you.

Is there any possibility of a policy review on mp3 posting? There are so many billions of blogs posting music for download, and some message boards even openly sharing albums via YSI and zShare, I wonder if we might, y'know, get away with it.

I just think it'd be nice.

Bye!

We can discuss it; I'm not really sure. We sort of...inherited the mp3 policy? It's certainly true you can download things these days without having to look particularly hard, but I'm not sure what the admin stance on that is. Or if we have an admin stance.

I know what he means. A lot of places do blog about music, and have the file up for a limited time only, and have disclaimers etc etc.

But I guess it really is an admin/martin decision isn't it? hmmm.

I fixed that a little for you.

That's what I was going to post originally, but had a brief moment of reticence!

Thanks for the feedback guys.

If anyone else wants to weigh in with opinions or suggestions that would be most welcome.

There's feedback? I want to see feedback! I thought this thread had died. :(

Can we post mp3s now? (And also find some kind of video embed widget for vBulletin or something?)

Sorry, Pete, the people who posted didn't want the posts to be public.

But it helped clarify a few things about how the mp3 rule has been inherited and where it came from originally and all that. And a few suggestions towards workarounds.

I'd love a youtube embed feature for the forum, to be honest. Another forum I'm on cleverly has it that you can only post videos in specific forums - which we could adapt for here, and just have them in the music forums / TMP or something so that threads don't get flooded with videos.

But honestly, we would need to have access to the server to be able to change any of that, I think. And that's out of the boundaries of what the supermods are able to do with this forum. Which is really frustrating, to be honest.

The youtube embed feature will be available in vBulletin 4.0, which I think will be released later this year.

But then again, Martin would have to upgrade the forum for that.

If only someone was willing to take @forumz over and bring it up to date and maintain it and shit. If only there was someone willing to grab the controls and bring this baby in to land. IF ONLY.

Well, there was a someone who was willing to do that, but his attempts to make that happen weren't really reciprocated. And so, here we are.

I know, that was the joke.

It's a shame a certain someone can't just start over somewhere else, and leave the toricrazies here.
Seems like a win/win to me! ;)

What if the policy was that no link was an active link, and only began with hxxp or something similar?

I have not been in the conversation so forgive me if I sound stupid because I don't know the facts.

Why couldn't we link to Torrents? (I know we link to Tori Trackers sometimes don't we?)

Torrents seem like a safe option. Most people can easily upload a torrent (depending on your ISP, Time Warner pretty much black listed TBP and similar sites).

I *think* the legalities (or lack thereof) surrounding torrents are similar to those with any other kind of mp3 file-sharing.

I think you're right, Erin. The idea behind torrenting is neat because it's hard to pinpoint a single person sharing a file. But if a link to the torrent is listed on @forumz, someone may (and I'm only speculating here, I don't know for sure) hold @ culpable. @tforumz isn't hosting the file, but they're giving pretty explicit directions as to where to get the file illegally. That said, I don't know whose radar @ is or isn't on, and as such this may be a lot of bluster amounting to nothing.

It's been ages since I've looked at the TOS from when we sign up. Do you know if there's anything in there which explicitly holds @ free of any liability for content posted by its users? Maybe that's something to explore? Just tossing out ideas.

(OK to post)
