View Full Version : What songs by Kate DON'T we like?

We all love Kate (don't we?) yaddayaddayadda (just check my sig) but what songs do you have the hardest time to like? For me it's definitely "Reaching out" on The sensual world. Apart from that song I love the album but I think I can safely say I'll never get in to it. It just feels like something written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Aight, now you fire away...

I don't like the title song off of Hounds Of Love...maybe it's because of the barking sound, I just can't get into it. Waking The Witch scares the hell out of me, but I don't dislike it really.

I haven't heard a song yet I -disliked- but I thought Deeper Understanding was a bit...cheesy.
But Waking the Witch is awesome!!

Okay, well I love the afore meantioned songs. I really dislike Eat The Music. And the last few songs on the Sensual World grate me up a tree. I really don't like that Trio Bullgarka or what ever they are called. The ruin that album in my opinion. Thank bloody god they were toned down on The Red Shoes. They aren's bad or anything.. their "sound" just makes me tense up and my ears hurt...

"Eat the Music"......... yuck!!!!!!
"Between a Man and a Woman" and "Constellation of the Heart" don't sit well with me either.

I love Kate in general, but there are numerous songs I really don't like by her:
The Man With the Child in His Eyes (hate it)
Mother Stands for Comfort
lots of stuff on The Dreaming (I don't even know the names cuz I haven't tried to listen to them in years!)
everything on The Red Shoes (except eat the Music. Song of Solomon, Moments of Pleasure and Rubberband Girl--these rock IMO)

I dl'd something nasty the other day called "Shoedance" I think it's a remix of "The Red Shoes" and is positively horrible.
Other songs I don't like....
James and the Cold Gun
This Woman's Work - I'm the only one who doesn't like this, so you can all come at me now ;)
The Sensual World
Heads Were Dancing
Between a Man and a Woman
-well, lets just say I don't get along with The Sensual World at all besides Love and Anger and Reaching Out and The Fog and Deeper Understanding
I haven't bought the Red Shoes, Lionheart, or Never For Ever yet...but I'm going to the store tomorrow to search for em...whatever's there I get.
Chris
well..
I'm not that mad about Between a Man and a Woman, Reaching Out, Walk Straight Down the Middle, Eat the Music, Top of the City and some other songs on The Red Shoes.
But from her earlier albums I really can't say right now. I'm not into James.. or In the Warm Room that much.
:m :m Heads We're Dancing :m :mbwahahahahaha!

I don't really care for a big portion of Lionheart.
I hate "Why Should I Love You" but we have the egomaniacal Prince to partly blame for that, so it's OK. ;)
"Between a Man and a Woman" and "Walk Straight Down the Middle" need to go too.
And that's about it, really.

Okay, with the caveat that these songs are not all that bad and I change my mind from day to day, here goes:
James and the Cold Gun
Heads We're Dancing
Between A Man And A Woman
Deeper Understanding -- I'm starting to warm up to this one because it was so ahead of its time. [post28]
Why Should I Love You?
Ken
The Confrontation

Top of the City -- struck from my list because I like it more every day. [hugs] ;n

Hi Lloyd! Nope, not an oversight -- I did dislike it for ages, mostly because I was devastated at Clapton's anemic performance, but I've changed my mind -- for some reason! I'm often influenced by her video interps and this one is subtle and bittersweet. [post28]
So many people voted against James -- that surprises me. I thought I was the only one who disliked it, even though I adore the outfit she wore to perform it at the Hammersmith Odeon. [hugs]
john and i were discussing James the other night. it's not that i don't like it, it just seems like a big sore thumb in the middle of the otherwise mellow TKI. i do, however, adore the live version of it.
and i don't hate clapton's performance on ASIL. i think since it's not a Clapton song, it shouldn't necessarily sound like one. i mean, isn't the main reason so many people dislike Why Should I Love You is that it sounds too Prince-y?
just my thoughts. :D

Good point, good point. I had preconceived notions about Kate's collaboration with Eric because he was one of the musicians I adored during the sixties & seventies, when he was a little more of a firebrand. I'd go see him in concert and he was carrying on the tradition of blistering, Hendrix-like solos. He's gone all mellow now which is something I need to (and will eventually) accept. My friend Sue thinks I'm a traitor! [wink]

I like most of The Sensual World...Deeper Understanding is the only song on it that I really can't stand. Like most of the others though.
I pretty much detest The Red Shoes apart from Rubberband Girl, Big Stripey Lie and Eat the Music.
Lionheart is nothing but a pale copy of the vastly superior Kick Inside, to my ears anyway.
I love everything on NFE, TD and HoL. Three classic albums in a row.

I've (like tori) never disliked any Kate song I've heard however L'Amour Looks Something Like You is the only song thats on the "not really bothered about" list. Apart from that, it took AGES for Constellation of the Heart to grow on me but it has now.

hmm, let's see. i'll try to go album by album.
TKI
i don't think i DON'T like any of these songs.
LH
Don't Push Your Foot . . . could easily be skipped.
NFE
nope, love this one. Egypt would be the closest to a dislike, though.
TD
hahahahaha don't be silly.
HoL
i think i've been pretty clear about my feelings about RUTH and HoL; but, i could never say i don't like them. i just don't understand why they're considered Kate Klassics. The Ninth Wave is flawless.
TSW
well, there's the Unholy Trinity. Reaching Out kinda grates my nerves a bit, too. (sorry, hon. ;k )
TRS
how 'bout i tell you which ones i love instead. I love Rubberband Girl, And So Is Love, Moments of Pleasure, Big Stripey Lie, and You're the One.
B-Sides (back to "don't likes")
The Empty Bullring
Lord of the Reedy River ( i can only deal with this in limited doses. it's by no means up there with Between a Man and a Woman, but . . . anyway, sorry Nancy. :( )
i think that's about it.

What's wrong with anything off The Sensual World? ;p And yet you guys like such atrocities as Moments and those other little silly ones from The Red Shoes I can't even remember. [post36] And yet you still hate Big Stripey Lie which is TRS' redeeming song. [post40] WTF? [post81]
PS: The Trio Bulgarka rocks on TSW and NOT I repeat NOT on TRS. I mean come on! Have mercy! [ouch]
I am angry now.
alex, you know i love ya, but Between a Man and a Woman makes [jesus] vomit. And Heads We're Dancing makes me a bit embarassed to be a Kate fan. Even Sarah McLachlan, the queen of purple cheese, calls Reaching Out a cheesy song.

OK, I'll do a Moz1972 as well...
The Kick Inside
I'm not the biggest fan of "James and the Cold Gun," but it certainly has its charm. "Room for the Life" is a bit 'meh' too.
Lionheart
Erm, where to begin?! Seriously though, it's just my least favourite Kate album by a country mile. "Fullhouse", "In the Warm Room", "Coffee Homeground"... Ick.
Never for Ever
Consistent from start to finish. I think "Violin" has its detractors but I love it!
The Dreaming and Hounds of Love
Both are flawless but I'm not the biggest fan of "All the Love".
The Sensual World
Took ages to grow on me as an album but apart from "Between a Man and a Woman" and "Walk Straight Down the Middle," it's all good for me. Oddly enough, I never had a problem with "Heads we're Dancing - always loved it.
The Red Shoes
"Constellation of the Heart" is quite cheesy, but it's fun and I do love my cheesy pop, and when it comes from an unlikely artist it's even more enjoyable. "Why Should I Love You" is just a huge mess. I've heard so many stories about the conception of this song with Prince and how he'd just stick on extra instruments to flex his muscles etc. I do love Prince but give it a break already. We know you're talented. "Big Stripey Lie" I have to be in the mood for. Sometimes it really grates on me.

Sarah McLachlan calls Reaching Out a cheesy song.
Now that's rich. :m Can she make it through a song of hers and not fall asleep? [post56] [post88] ;p ;d
And I guess all of you who hate parts of TSW is because you may not have had the album long enough. It was the first Kate album I bought on release and I've lived with it so long that it makes me frustrated to hear such comments. :s If Heads We're Dancing is embarrassing, then what is Eat The Music, Moments Of Pleasure, You're The One, Why Should I Love You, Constellation Of The Heart, Show A Little Devotion, You Want Alchemy and those other crappity crap CRAP B-sides? :m

Christ, I thought I was the only Kate fan in the known universe who thought Moments was a pile of nicely-orchestrated drivel? Well, not exactly drivel but certainly sub-par lyrically, and generally wildly over-rated.
I do like Eat the Music though. Sue me
John.
11-02-2004, 04:03 PM
Well, as long as we're being all honest and stuff... ;)
TKI- Room for the Life makes it difficult for me to keep the crabcakes down. James is clunky, but I don't hate it as much as I once did.
LH- I know this album the least of them all, but I can't really think of any track that's offensive.
NFE- no real problems with this one, either; although Egypt wouldn't be missed terribly
TD- all good
HoL- Hmmmm. There is that little bump in the Ninth Wave... *whistles*
TSW- Between a Man... is truly the shit pebble floating in this otherwise scrumptious bowl of Fruit Loops. Reaching Out, however, ROCKS! *strikes lighter, waves it high*
TRS- the aforementioned CotH and Big Stripey Lie are both a mess. If not for the lyrics, Eat the Music would be unlistenable.

TKI- Room for the Life makes it difficult for me to keep the crabcakes down.!
Actually, I agree.
It's not the sound - it's the lyrics. I'm not quite sure if she meant them to sound like an advert for some bizarre pro-natalist anti-abortion group who make women wear 19th century dresses and biblical hairstyles and stay home dusting the rug all day, but twenty-five odd years down the road, that's exactly how they sound. "There's room for a life in your womb, woman," - actually Katey, there's isn't. That's what some of us use contraception for. Ugh.
well, alex, i did call sarah the queen of purple cheese. my point being that if a cheesy artist is calling a kate song cheesy, that's kinda saying something.

Hmmm.
TKI: I don't dislike any of them, but I tend to skip "Room for the Life" more than half the time.
Lionheart: I honestly love every song on this album.
Never for Ever: Sometimes Violin tickles me, but I consider it sub-par. I don't get the Egypt-dislike --- it's one of my favs!
The Dreaming: 10 stunners. Nothing approaching a dud in the bunch.
Hounds of Love: I know this will raise some eyebrows, but I often turn the album off after "Hello Earth" is finished . . . *hides*
The Sensual World: I go back on forth on this album. I've really enjoyed all of these songs at some point, but I might jump for the 'skip' button if they come on: Between a Man and a Woman, Reaching Out, and (to a lesser extent), Never Be Mine.
The Red Shoes: I don't own it yet!

11-02-2004, 08:39 PM
Let's see:
The Kick Inside: James and the Cold Gun, Oh To Be In Love
Lionheart: Symphony In Blue, and some others from time to time...
Never For Ever: Perfect, but sometimes All We Ever Look For is a bit dull.
The Dreaming: --
Hounds of Love: --
The Sensual World: The Unholy Trinity
The Red Shoes: Hmm, I like And So Is Love, Moments of Pleasure, Lily, the ending of The Song of Solomon, and sometimes, Rubberband Girl.
With Kate, songs tend to be hit-or-miss, whereas Tori songs tend to grow on me. I suppose it's because the execution/production of some Kate songs are so dated that it's hard to connect to them. (Sorry to make comparisons, but I can't help it, just look at my sig).

Yes, it would be great to feel free to critique songs without feeling horribly guilty. Alex, I'm surprised and worried that you of all people should be so upset at others for stating honestly how they feel about certain songs. You have always been such a breath of fresh air the way you never hesitate to criticise the songs you feel are not up to par -- I look forward to hearing the unvarnished truth from you at all times, and your taste is SO beautifully eclectic! [hugs] I've praised The Sensual World album so many times it's beginning to sound redundant, yet it did take a while for many of the songs such as Reaching Out to reach out to me. If this were an appreciation thread I'd be drooling over the title track, The Fog, Never be Mine, and my beloved, madly over-the-top Rocket's Tail. Not to mention This Woman's Work and Walk Straight Down the Middle! Please don't feel the album is being dissed! If anything The Red Shoes is the one that so many people find lacking -- to the utter dismay of those who genuinely love it! Isn't there room for more than one point of view on the songs we like or dislike? [post14]
Lloyd, I'm not just saying this -- Lord of the Reedy River is by no means everyone's cup of tea and I'm pleased you felt you could share your honest misgivings about it. 'Salright!!! If this forum had no diverse opinions it would be like living amongst a league of robots. [post04] :)

beautifully stated, as usual, Nancy.

Just wanted to say thank you, Nancy. :D
Hmmmm.. . there are a few Kate songs that I don't particularly enjoy. but then I'm always willing to reserve my judgement on it, as I've had songs of hers cross over from the "neh" category, into the "oh my god.. . I really get it now" and I've been listening to Kate Bush for years...
But, that said. Here's my less-than-favoured tracks.
Heads We're Dancing - some days I like it though.
Between A Man And a Woman - ditto, mostly skip, but sometimes get into it.
The Warm Room - really don't enjoy it at all. Hardly ever.. the only track on Lionheart I dont' enjoy
Constellation Of The Heart, Top Of The City and Why Should I Love You - I started not liking at all. Not one little bit. But I had it on tape, and had to listen to it, or fastforward, which killed my walkman batteries. So I listened.
I'm still not overly fond of Top Of The City, but I've gotten past the bad lyrics on the other two, and quite like them in a way. They're not her best stuff, but they have something about them that grows.
I don't skip past anything on The Dreaming.
Initially I never liked Watching You Without Me, until one winter I listened to it alone, and just got it.
I had a similar experience with Tori's China, which I never liked, until one day.. . i found a big book. . .

Well, apparently the torch has been passed, because after years of adoring this song and preaching about it to TOTC doubters, I've finally listened to it too much [YIKES]
As for Kate songs I don't like:
Eat The Music
The Burning Bridge (yuck! sorry...)
Heads We're Dancing (worst Kate song ever!)
Reaching Out (although her vocals are very impressive)
Room For The Life (yet every now and then, this song rubs me the right way...but it is rare)
Song I used to hate but now love:
The Morning Fog!
Sarah.

Think I'm in a grouchy mood, so can think of plenty of Kate songs I'm not a fan of!
TKI - sometimes Kite is too much other times I love it and will happily screech along to it! But Room for the Life is a bad, bad song! Its so twee sounding, ugh, ugh, ugh
Lionheart - virtually whole album. I have never been able to get into this album, and I don't know why. Love Wow, if only because you can do such a good dance routine to it
NfE - love it all, even the orgasmic cat that is Violin
TD - Used to dislike All the Love, now like it very much, despite the annoying choir boy. Otherwise it is perfect album
HoL - Love every song, but sometimes I can't be bothered to listen to the crazy intenseness that is Waking the Witch, and skip it. When I was younger, I didn't like Hello Earth because it reminded me of coal mining choirs, but now I can appreciate it a lot more
TSW - Hmmm. Some of this album I absolutely love (The Sensual World, Love and Anger, The Fog, Never be Mine, This Woman's Work) the rest of it I just think, stop making this awful noise you silly woman! And Deeper Understanding makes me cringe so much
TRS - Again, love some of it, but I have to say it hasn't aged well and a lot of it sounds like over produced mess, also think it is a bit of a smug album, like Kate was going "look at me, I'm so respected I can get Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck on one album! Oh, and that classical violin guy!" And the utter awfulness that is You're the one, well I have ranted many a time over that and its awful lyrics and cheesy synthesizer noises.
I am actually quite shocked at my own venomous outbursts here. I do still love Kate, honestly!

Album by album:
The Kick Inside--I can't think of anything I hate on here. I don't love this album, but I don't hate it either.
Lionheart--God, I dislike this album A LOT. Wow, Symphony and Peter Pan are the three bits I like.
Never For Ever--Perfect.
The Dreaming--Perfect.
Hounds of Love--Perfect.
The Sensual World--I don't care for Between a Man and a Woman and Walk Straight Down the Middle
The Red Shoes--Big Stripey Lie, the Prince song (I actually like the rest of this album a lot)

Didn't Sarah McLachlan include "Reaching Out" on that Starbucks Music They Love CD, or some bullshit? If so, her calling it cheesey is kind of fucked up.
The only stuff I really dislike is on "The Red Shoes." Pretty much most of it, except "Moments of Pleasure" and "Top of the City," which I think are incredible. "And So Is Love" is great for the first two minutes, then it loses steam. The last song on there - I forget the name - is pretty good, but again, it falters after the first two minutes or so.
hehe. yeah, sarah called Reaching Out cheesy on the starbuck's compilation. :D

Hi Bobby! I think it's so cool that Tori chose the title of her new album with you in mind! :) [hugs]

The Kick Inside - Feel It, Room for Your Life and the title track are nothing special. Them Heavy People irritates.
Lionheart - virtually all of this album sucks apart from Fullhouse and Symphony in Blue
Never for Ever - I really don't like Babooshka, Wedding List, Violin, Army Dreamers or The Infant Kiss.
The Dreaming - Perfect and her first album I really take seriously by her. Night of a Swallow is my least favourite if I had to choose one.
Hounds of Love - Mother stands for comfort is a bit dull but the rest, especially the 9th Wave is just amazing, her 'Choirgirl' [post26]
The Sensual World - Don't like Reaching Out, The Fog, Heads We're Dancing, Between a Man and a Woman, Walking through the Middle of it
The Red Shoes - the most unfairly criticised album of all time ;m - only the last two tracks are weak. They should have put on You Want Alchemy as a closer.

All the Lionheart dislike hurts me. :( Although I sometimes skip a few songs on it, I truly adore that album.
Thanks to the fab Rinkydink I got LH and TKI at the same time, and I much preferred Lionheart for about two months. I like TKI more now (many of those songs had to grow on me), but it's a very close thing. Lionheart is so theatrical, so autumnal. For some reason, I connect it and The Sensual World with lovely September days in the countryside.

Sorry, just can't take it seriously. Tracks like 'Coffee Homeground', 'Kashka' and the title track are just plain embarrasing. She sounded like she hadn't grown up yet. I admit though that for her time, she was incredibly original but she hadn't got it together yet.
In some ways amazingly I find 'The Dreaming' her first mainstream album as it's the first album that doesn't sound completely dated.

I like Lionheart for its Bertolt Brecht-ian, Threepenny Opera-type songs. It's like a demented cabaret. I got it fairly soon after The Kick Inside and at the time of release, neither of those albums sounded sounded like anything else I'd ever heard -- though I suppose now they might seem dated. The Dreaming was panned by the critics and simultaneously adored by the fans when it first came out. I think it was so far ahead of its time that most journalists just couldn't take it in.

Selfishly, I like my input in this thread.
Also, after months of trying, I finally liked Top Of The City. Go me.

Hit it on the nose. I did not like the album at first, but then a few years later I found it to be absolutely brilliant.
I have quite a few tracks that I quite dislike...
-James and The Cold Gun
-Them Heavy People
-Don't Push Your Foot on The Heartbrake
-The Wedding List
-Violin
-Between A Man and A Woman
-Eat The Music
-Constellation of The Heart
-Why Should I Love You?
-You're The One
...and saving the best for last....
-Wuthering Heights - I honestly cannot connect with this song at all.

Of course not...there is no feeling bad here. You like what you like and you don't like what you don't like. [YIKES] - I just wanted to use that smiley because I never have before and it's funny ;n

Ahhh, what's with The Red Shoes hate? Dare I say it...? I like it more than Hounds of Love. Lily is only like the best Kate Song Ever EVER. And Eat the Music.... I can't believe the hate for that, wow. The lyrics make me happy, my only real complaint is her voice is too buried under everything else.
And the same with The Sensual World! Now, that's not as good as Hounds of Love, but still. The title track alone, oh yes. Deeper Understanding is amazing for 1989. Now, I agree, Between A Man and a Woman isn't what you might call.... great. But Head's We're Dancing is just... fun.
ANYwhore, songs I don't like:
James and the Cold Gun.
Fullhouse
Breathing (I just don't .... feel it)
Pull Out the Pin (Blasphem, I'm aware, but sue me).
The Morning Fog
Between A Man and a Woman

In the same way that some of the members of the MTF felt they had to constantly defend SW from criticism all the time, I feel I have to defend The Red Shoes by Kate. It's up there with the Hounds of Love and The Dreaming as her best album, albeit for a completely different reason from them two.
It's a very brave, personal album which she put her heart in. I 100% admire her for releasing it as you really feel that she is pulling off the veil of mystery that has shrouded her earlier work.

Er, with the difference being that SW is a nice album and TRS is an awful one, to put it mildly.

I give up.
I give up.
aww don't. .
The Red Shoes is a beautifully flawed album. There are some songs I don't particularly like, and some that are quite wonderful.
