View Full Version : What kind of RPG's do you play?

...Computer or otherwise?

I mainly stick in the fantasy genre with D&D, but I cross over into the homemade modern day system as I told the story with in another topic.

i stopped gaming about a year ago when i was pregnant, sitting in that smoky room made me wanna puke and we gamed for 8 hour stretches.

we were playing some modified BASIC d&d game. i was a magic-user... geez, gotta find my character pack, its around here somewheres... it was fun, we had a great campaign going....

i have played gurps... i like gurps a lot,

and played some masquerade... are we talking live action rpgs too?

I used to play stuff on computer, but it's been a while.

When I first started high school there was some D&D, and some other game I can't remember the name of...think it started with an R. Runes...something...maybe.

I don't know, unless it's on computer I'm not as interested.

I'm fully into MMORPGs. No time for anything else and the internet makes RPGing that much easier. No logistical effort required.

Rath_Dawg
08-02-2000, 10:35 PM
There's only so much the internet can do though...but there are people who don't mind being in front of the computer all day and not deal with dice at all.

I'd miss the hell out of my dice...and there's nothing better than rolling a 20 and killing something through the double damage caused by it.

Rath_Dawg: Not a fan of LARP, too silly for me. Nothing like gnawing on chips, drinking soda and trying to figure out what to do to kill the monster in a tabletop game with your friends nearby.

The thing for me with the internet and MMORPGs are that there are literally thousands of other people running around at the same time, doing their thing while I'm doing mine - along with my group of friends.
This kind of environment allows almost anything to happen. You could be standing in a market square when some idiot who likes the look of your sword decided to gank you in the back to try and get it.
You form friendships in the game much as people do at places like theGlobe or atForumz: through continued interaction. Some of these people may be your best allies or turn out to be some of your worst enemies.
There is an excitement to the unknown. Each person is controlled by one other person who has their own motives and own goals. A virtual community with social interaction ranging from murderous rampages to benevolent gift giving and assistance.
The only thing some MMORPGs lack is a guided plot, that's what the DM or GM is for in Pen and Paper RPGs. Everquest provides some plot in the form of quests and Shadowbane will rely on a player-driven plot stemming from the major players who've seized control. In this realm, I as an individual can choose to ignore all the political events around me or take an active part in them. I can choose to join a band of brigands and pillage the countryside or try my best to gain followers to form my own empire.
Action and battle is spectacular in Everquest where much like Pen and Paper RPGs combat is divided into turns, although these turns in EQ are seamless. Of course, the probability of success is based on your statistics, your skills, and a computer generated roll.
So I guess that's why I like MMORPGs and that's why I'm gonna get into Shadowbane.

p.s. the link I put in the first post is a bad one. The real URL is http://www.shadowbane.com

It's sounds more interesting than it sounded in your topic going further into it, but then again, my connection could never withstand being connected for that long. It's also another reason why I don't like the multiplayer games...I can't stay connected long enough before getting booted by my ISP. grrrr...

Plot is a driving force to keep people playing though...my older brother pretty much sucked at having a good one going, but this new group has no problem with it at all. But then again, I wish I was playing a Dwarven Battle Rager when those Skeletons tried to use me as a fleshy gang bang target.

I'll check out that link after I get done on the Xanth MOO...this RP'ing in a MOO/MUD is different for me...as I'm more the strength of the group ripping down doors and stuff like that. lordy.

Rath_Dawg: Still ripping doors off hinges though in that D&D group. But that stupid Knight of Solamnia wanted me to repair it...grrrr...

I thought the MMORPG thing would be kind of dorky when I first thought about playing but they've turned out to be great fun and much much better than I expected.

I used to have reservations about paying $10/month too, but for the price of 2 packs of cigs and a cup of coffee you get endless hours of compelling entertainment and excitement.

Chamouni (Clohe) and I are still playing Everquest too. Here's a link to a story about an adventure we had, complete with links to screenshots, with a guild I used to lead.

Talk to ya later, gotta head to work.

I finally got around to that site and I have to say that if I didn't have this crappy dialup, I'd probably be up on that.

But then again, my graphics card may freak out and not play like it does with Diablo II. grrrr...

Rath_Dawg: I'm okay as long as I don't leave the encampment, otherwise it'll freeze as soon as I set foot off the bridge.

I play everquest. My boyfriend got me into it. I don't have anyone in a high level yet. But I really like starting new characters. Druids are my favorite right now. Having many characters at low levels, the druid is the most fun right off the bat. I like the spell casters :)
I have a very hectic work schedule so it's nice to come home and play everquest for a little while and chill out.

What server do you play on?

RPG's -- yummy. :e

As far as tabletop goes, I love D&D. It's great. :) I also enjoy Vampire: The Dark Ages, Ironclaw, and Hunter: The Reckoning, and a few others, but I haven't gotten as much enjoyment out of them as I have gotten out of D&D.

I'm currently playing Minds' Eye Theatre LARP -- it's ok, but I'd rather be doing tabletop. There's just something about LARP'ing that's, well...weird. Not a bad weird, just kinda.... eh. :g

I play EQ -- not half as much as I used to, but I still keep my account active. For anyone who's interested, my main server is Bristlebane.

Hhmm..if you want to count miniatures, I've only played one miniatures game, Necromunda, but I really enjoyed it and I'd love to try 40k or something like that.

Computer and console RPG's - I love the Dragon Warrior series for the NES. Wonderful, wonderful stuff. Like a hot fudge sundae for the soul, IMHO! :e
I also enjoyed Shining the Holy Ark for the Sega Saturn, and I'm currently looking for more games in that series to play.
The Zelda series is fantastic as well -- yes, a lot of the earlier games aren't strictly RPG'ish, they kinda fall more in the adventure game catagory, but I think the later ones are wonderfully addictive RPG's. :)
Planescape: Torment for the PC was great -- verra addicting. :) I didn't get into Baldur's Gate, but I have played Icewind dale a little, and I like what I see so far.

I did, and I didn't like it. *yick*

It was Diabloesque, but the graphics were a bit choppy, the 170MB download was hellacious, and it just didn't do much for me.

I'm gonna try and get Spark hooked on Dark Ages... That's the game I was playing before we dated and she attracted too much of my attention... ;)

i kind of got out of mmorpg's, as i never could devote the time for playing it like it was supposed to be played. Though Ashterons call 2 is frighteningly seductive. I am into a kind-of -sort mmorpg for the gc(and preciously the dreamcast) called phantasy star online. though it is more of a deep gauntlet than everquest.

On consoles i used to play a lot of j-rpgs, like final fantasy and dragon warrior/quest, but the similarity of storyline, and increasingly forced leveling up has pushed me away. morrowind proved to be a well made rpg though, and i have been playing that a good bit.

as for pen and paper, my old dm has not been in the hobby for a while, but i used to do shadowrun, gamma world, And i used to gm star frontiers and dungeons and dragons Oriental adventures. but havent gamed that way for years.

American made RPGs just don't pull me in. Probably because they're more based on D&D than Japanese made ones because that's their target audience.

Japanese RPGs focus more on story while American ones focus more on gameplay. That's not to say that Japanese ones don't have good gameplay nor that American ones don't have good stories.

Take Diablo and Final Fantasy. You could play Diablo for hours on end just crushing skeleton going down floor to floor and not give a damn what it's all about while in Final Fantasy, you're pulled into the story because that's how you have to figure out what to do next.

I play a lot of MMORPGs but lately I haven't been able to stay in any. I'll go in and out of EverQuest periodically, go in Ragnarok for periods of 15 minutes... Log into Realm once in a blue moon.

Mega Man Battle Network for game boy advance is a good spin on the RPG genre, IMO.

Heh. That's the thing, isn't it, Verc? I'm antisocial in most cases. When I first started playing Ultima Online, I was in pretty bad shape emotionally and quite depressed. I'd make all sorts of "newbie" assumptions about the game (this isn't a UO forum so I won't discuss them in length) but what I did was learn from each of my mistakes. From my earliest days, I tried my best to helpful and sociable. In life, I'm always the bitter loner who hardly ever speaks, but in the game I was quite out-going.

After a number of years (I won't say how many because the relevance is not an issue here), I've noticed some startling things about the others who played the game. That I could build tradesmen to suit my own purposes and needs was not terribly surprising. But I didn't like comforming to the "mule" mentality where my craftsmen were only allowed to create objects for sale and never to act in combat with monsters or other players. The other thing I wasn't out to impress anyone, so I've never had any Roxxor chars wearing flashy, rare weapons or armor. The Roxxor people behaved in two ways: they either loitered at a bank in Trammel and spammed which items they were selling to each other, or they hanged out in the "safe" zones where they could fight each other Fellucia without trudging far from civilization.

What surprises me is that I hardly ever meet anyone far from a town --- such as in a dungeon or out on the field --- in Fellucia. The dungeons of Trammel are always flooded with people who are possesive of the monsters they fight and are quick to abuse each other with words. However, I could go to Fel dungeon and meet absolutely no one at all. And should someone come into the dungeon while I'm there? I have to be careful that this person doesn't attempt to attack and kill me. If people are so tough in Fel, how come I hardly ever see anyone in the dungeons?

So, I observe how others behave and interact in the game. I've tried just about everything in the game and have become quite bored of it. One my least favorite players is a person who'll complain about being "Ganked" (I guess it's short for gang-attack) by a group of people rather than fighting singly with an opponent. I always tell them, "This is a Massively Multiplayer game. Welcome to the internet, moron. Now go back to playing chess if you want to play a two player game." My other issue is veterans who show off how long they have been playing the game with their char's appearance --- oh, wow, that guy has flourescent orange hair and an orange beard *snooze* --- and obsess over every minute detail of gameplay. "Ebay" is a common way to insult a person. Ask him if he bought his account if he tries to show off.

I've been playing UO for a while. I'm not a newbie. Yet that doesn't stop people from calling me one because of how I dress my chars or equip them with weapons or anything else. Uh...

Sorry. Got carried away. Any how, I never set out to get rich in-game. None of my chars are. Very few of them are finished. I have craftsmen, but I do not sell anything to other players. I'm not a Hechinger's employee, so buy your damn hardware from some other person. I've also figured out that I'm a reasonably compassionate and helpful person in RL; provided I'm in the right environment. For the past six months or so, I have been volunteering at a mental health drop-in-center and have met quite a few people that I consider my friends. (The ones I like best are the "Sexual Minority" ones.) I still don't have a cable modem, I'm still using the same computer I had two years ago, and I still can't play any games that require 3D acceleration because I can't uprade my computer that way. Will I ever be a Roxxor Newbie-Killer in UO? Nah. I'm too busy screwing around to care.

Do I like UO? On a whole, I'll say it's the most nonlienear experience I've had. I'll also say it has changed quite a lot since I've started playing and alot of interesting things happened. I won't say it's perfect. I won't say that I love the dang thing because there are many reasons why I cannot.

I'm just waiting until Enix re-releases the Super Famicom Dragon Quest games onto PS2. Heck, toss in a MMO feature and release them together in one package in the US and I'll be ecstatic. Oh, wait. While I'm asking for that, why not Sega's Dragon Force 1 & 2 as well?

*crosses legs, folds hands together in lap and waits patiently*

Not just that that person played those games, but that person implied that they prefer those older RPGs over current games.

And to be frank, I don't come across too many people like that. Then again, I sell new video games at my job. So maybe that's why.
