<font face="comic sans ms">Love Portishead. Brings back memories of driving to see Tori in Columbus in 98. We listened to the live in ny cd the entire way up there. (if i remember correctly it was semi-new at that time.) I love Beth's voice; so sexy. And it's great mood music.

LipGlossGrl...we kind of did it simultaneously. She had just seen them on a rerun of SNL on Comedy Central and that night i was with her and she said that she wanted that cd so we went and got it together.
I listened to it and kind of liked it. Then i got the cd myself and all of a sudden i became addicted! It happened in a like a day.
So that is the story. i guess that annie got into it first...you should give them another try. hope to see you when i come home.....;k

I don't have any of their CDs, but one of my friends does and I've really enjoyed listening to that.
Which CD would you recommend to buy first? I don't even know what they're called, sorry!

Get their live CD! It has the best tracks off of both their albums (well, omitting Wandering Star, which rocks) but they're even more powerful!! Dummy is great, their self-titled album is even better, but Portishead's live CD ROCKS! (and I almost never use that word, ahem)

See-- I'd have to disagree-- I think that the first disc, "Summy" is the strongest of the three. I just recently bought the live disc and thought that it was pretty weak. The textures and miscellaneous sounds that come together in their songs were all but lost-- it just didn't do it for me. And furthermore-- having loved "Dummy"-- I went out and bought the 2nd, self-titled, disc-- and I just hated it. I've tried to give it another chance like 3 or 4 times and it just doesn't work for me.
So my recommendation, as always-- is get "Dummy." Others disagree-- but this is my opinion.
I like all three of their albums myself, but Dummy is my fave. If you want good live PH look for the 'Welcome to Portishead' bootleg...it's from Blackpool 95...that show rocks my world! [yes, I think it's better than the PNYC release]

I dug up an old Q magazine for research purposes and this evening I was flicking through it and found the review for Portishead - Portishead. It mentions the sample at the end of "Western Eyes" which is credited on the album as S. Atkins, taken from "The Sean Atkins Experience", 1957, Starfish Records Inc. This is a joke. "The Sean Atkins Experience" does not exist. The review explains that this is a made-up sample which "has been slowed to a Sinatra pace". Sean Atkins is a member "of Bristol band The Whores Of Babylon", and a friend of Geoff Barrow. And here's my connection...
My brother went to University in Bath and his friend Emma went to University in Bristol. There she met a punk named Joe and they moved in together. My brother moved in with them last year as he had nowhere else to go. But Joe played guitar in a band who had just released their first album. This band was/is called Soundisciples, but only because the record label wouldn't sign them under their previous name: The Whores Of Babylon. I met Joe quite a few times and we drank Absinth together, but he and Emma split up last summer. I never met Sean Atkins, but my brother did and apparently he's lovely.
I'm not doing a "I sort of know someone famous" thing, I just thought it was a weird coincidence just finding out that the voice on "Western Eyes" was sort-of familiar to me.
Confusion.

Beth Gibbons solo album but she's not leaving Portishead
Beth Gibbons and Rustin' Man are the voice of Portishead and her mate Paul Webb (of Talk Talk). Releasing her debut solo album 'Out Of Season' on October 28th, Beth will be taking the album on the road - watch this apace for details of UK and continental shows and then continue work on the next Portishead album, due 2003.. The album is largely semi-acoustic and deeply moving. Lead track 'Mysteries' will promote the release but not be available in the shops.

OH.MY.GOD.
I have never been this excited about an artist realeasing new work...I am gunna see her on tour if its the last thing I ever do. Ever.
Im also kind of really excited about the news of portishead finally releasing the ever elusive third album in 2003 at some point, but after all the news for the last couple of years about release dates and the album being done and everything else, its hard to take the news too seriously....

Have found some more info on new album...taken from http://users.cybercity.dk/~bcc11425/News.html
---------------------------------------------------------------------
August 22, 2002
Beth Gibbons and Rustin' Man - the singer of Portishead and Paul Webb, formerly bass player of Talk Talk - will release the brand new album 'Out of Season' on October the 28th. The album is produced by Talk Talk engineer Phill Brown and will also feature Lee Harris. The release will be followed by a tour including UK and continental dates. More details will follow shortly. The album is released on Go Beat.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
They also have news about this on a Gobeat! website and I have found the album amongst the releases for october on two different music sites. Although on both sites, they do not give 'out of season' as the title of the album and only list it as an album with beth gibbons and paul webb with tilte unknown.
I think it looks pretty certain though...deffinately not a hoax or anything...

It's not as good as a new Portishead album (AUGH, the wait is excruciating!) but it's still enough to make MY day! I love Beth Gibbon's lyrics and singing style, this should be pretty good.
I've got a question : will this album be released under Beth Gibbons her name, or is the name of the artist also coming up there ( like they did with Polly Jean Harvey & John Parish and Hermann & Kleine and many others... ) ?
Jefferson

it will be released under "beth gibbons & rustin' man", rustin' man being paul webb from talk talk.
need i say it's been playing on my stereo and in my head for ages? i can't remember the tracklisting nor exact song titles, but there are two tracks that will make everyone shiver with excitement: the first is the only "upbeat" number, the title has the name "tom" in it, and it's better than any portishead song i've ever heard. the chorus ... whoa: "so do what you gotta do and don't misunder ... staaand me". that half a second break inbetween "misunder" and "stand" is breathtaking. then there's "drake", a wonderful and very talk talk-ish song. most of the tracks i remember as being very sad and calm and sometimes truly depressive. soundwise it's got the fattest hammond organs ever, lots of brass and it's not too far away from the later talk talk records after "the colour of spring".
that makes me think ... a duet between beth and mark hollis would be something i'd give my left index finger for. well, maybe not.

When I was "dating" a girl named Stacey, Undenied was apparently her song for me. So I listened to it, and loved it, and then bought a buncha' Portishead albums!

"Seven Months"
"Western Eyes"

Portishead released a DVD called PNYC earlier this year. On it you have a live concert from them, it is excellent! It has an orchestra playing with them. You also have a few short movies the band made, and all their music videos too. It's a great DVD.

Portishead are probally my fave 'band' ever...Beth is still with Portishead and has apparently already recorded her vocals for the new album, which as someone said is due for release early 2003.
I like both studio albums equally...they are too different to compare for me...as is Beths solo album. Although I did also have that kind of 'wow, this is better than portishead' thought...but its just a completely different sound.
They also released a 2 disc album called 'Glory Times' Which is mainly remixes from Sour times and Glorybox but also has some other stuff on it...is deffinately worth buying if you can find it...
Oh, and if you can, download 'Only You' (french version). Beth sings all the verses in french which sounds really cool...
:p
I love Portishead. Got "Dummy" and the live album, and I think I'll check out the self titled album one day. I heard so much great stuff about that one.

since you bought the first one, go for the second one next.... its self-titled, and many will tell you they like it better, but i disagree. Dummy is Perfection to me. Especially "its a fire" ... then get the live cd, and then the Sour Times single (has some kick ass mixes, plus 'to kill a dead man theme' - Lastly get Beth Gibbon's solo cd. Its brilliant, and rivals Dummy for my favorite release.

There are serious doubts about the future of Portishead as it seems that Beth is going to continue and extend her European tour until this summer. The rumours about the forthcoming [P] album "Alien" are defective as Beth continues the promotion of her album Out Of Season. To avoid any disappointment of Portishead fans, Alien is still an unconfirmed album which is going to be released at the end of March although many sites and music databases include it to the forthcoming releases (like Phead does).

The latest from www.phead.org
03/07/2003 Reliable sites and sources to mention "Alien" as the new album
"the first one was Phead.org. then, the largest datadabse in the world allmusic (amg- te largest and reliable music database in the world) and ubl (artist direct) then, msn entertainment and the magazine pitchfork then platomania (http://www.platomania.nl/verwacht.asp) and pause and play. and many many more sites with OFFICIAL announcements from record company.. for example, pitchfork states for its list of new releases: "Source information for Pitchfork release dates include Amazon, Brainwashed, CMJ, Insound, Pause & Play, official record label websites, and press releases sent from various labels. All dates are subject to change. "
i have seen sites confirm "alien" being released April 22th.. so, we have to wait..
i believe that this information is true because many reliable sources have mention it as a new release.. the release date is not so sure however the album details are. when i came in contact with amg the webmaster said that "ALIEN" was listed from an official list of the record company to be released this year but the date is a subject that can be changed easily from the band or the company. also, i trust ubl and amg so i expect the new album to be released soon.
have fun"
The above "I"s refer to whoever put this entry up--not me!
Looks like the initial April rumors may stick after all. The 22nd would place ALIEN up against Madonna's AMERICAN LIFE.
At this point, I'll be happy if ALIEN even does exist, period!:p

Despite the fact that many press magazines mention "Alien" as the new album, Portishead finally updated their "breaking news" section and denied the name or the release of this new album. "Alien" was finally just one more rumour like "Pearl" was and now noone knows what Portishead will do or when they're going to release the new album.. Phead, Ubl, Amg, Pitchfork and Msn-entertainment seemed to be wrong about the new album release but the good news is that the webmaster of the official site *FINALLY* responed to this confusion called "Alien"!! Better than nothing! the official statement is:
"We have noticed that there is some confusion on an album release called "Alien".
Please be aware that this is NOT a Portishead release. The band are in
the studio working on new material now but no release dates are scheduled as yet.
Keep an eye on the site as any release plans will of course be announced here first!"
As the webmaster of Phead I'd like to wish Portishead good luck to their new work and hope to have their new album soon and not in 6 years or so!

Why does it always take soooooo long to record one album.. I don't know since when they started recording but as for example Kate Bush said is making an album at the end of 2001 and 1 and a half year later still nothing heard of it!! Argh.. I'm just impatient..

Well, it was at the benicassim fesitval in Spain about a month ago. She was the last act on the main stage, at 3am!
It was a wonderful performance; basically she played everything on the Out of season album. It was perfefct for the time of night, and a big crowd had stayed. It was obviously at the beginning that a lot of people hadnt heard her without Portishead, but she made a big impression; there were people in tears at the end of the set! And 'Funny Time of Year', which is a beautiful song anyway, made my heart stop...without wanting to spoil the surprise for you; live its very drawn out and builds to a different crescendo to the recorded version, its very powerful.
I guarantee you'll enjoy the show...the only thing is its not exactly uplifting ;)

The show was absolutely fantastic. Worth every cent. There were so many different instruments that were on stage. We had front row center so we were about 6 feet away from Beth. The two songs that had a Phead vibe were "funny time of year" and "spyder" which totally blew us all away. I hope you get the chance to see her for this is the first and last time she will be solo.

if I had to pick a favourite song, it would probably be glory Box, though it's one of those songs which annoys me because I keep wanting to sing it but can't since, well, I'm not a woman. Well, for a while they were having label issues, so they all were going off and doing their own thing...Beth :Solo cd and tour...Geoff: mixing with other bands, Adrian: Playing on various albums and touring with Beth for her solo stuff... and Dave: was touring with Sigur Ros and helping out some other bands as well.
So now that they have most of the label crap sorted out,and if everything goes well according to that then I can see it being released by the end of 2005 beginning of 2006. I know when we last spoke to Beth, she had promised us that she'd back back around NY within the next few years with Portishead and I jokingly said .." In what another 7 years?"....she reassured us that it wouldn't be that long.

Found some info on the Lisboa gig (from the 20th):
Beth sang 2 songs with Rodrigo Leão [founder of Madredeus], one from her solo album (don't know which one tho) and the other one called "Lonely carousel", which was performed again as an encore.
"Lonely carousel" [feat. Beth] is track#3 in Rodrigo Leão's last CD, called "Cinema", which seems to have been out since summer in Portugal at least. Rodrigo said in an interview he sent a few songs to Beth and she liked an instrumental called "A strada" (which is in the album as well) - to which he added lyrics for Beth. She recorded them in some studios in Lisboa and that's about it. I'm curious to hear it now. :)
If you understand Portuguese, more info on the album and a review of the concert is found here (http://groups.msn.com/AMINHABARQUINHA)

artists will be added to the bill very soon.
We'll each play a short set, around 20 minutes
and we'll be performing songs you know – very
nearly unplugged. As so many of you are based
outside of the UK the whole event can be viewed
as a live web-cast and we'll be posting more
details of this here so keep checking the site.

This is the year of the return-from-oblivion. First Kate Bush, now Portishead!

Portishead touring with Goldfrapp would be an amazing dream come true for me (Just thinking about how fabulous that sounds). This is good news though, about fffuckin time.

A. That's lovely, I was just about to say how lucky the English are again ;) I'm more happy with the album news !! (though it could still mean the album could come out early next year..but we're getting one anyway !)
NME covered this news item too - they said something about collaborations [omg]

It would be great but wouldn't happen since a certain woman doesn't like Allison.. *chuckles*
but yes, it would have been amazing to see massive attack and portishead on the same stage...fuck..why can't I be rich?

News! (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/music/4185511.stm)
Cult British group Portishead have revealed they are writing their third album, their first in eight years.
Founding member Geoff Barrow told BBC 6 Music the record was well on the way to being completed.
"We're actually into it as we speak. We took some time off for Christmas, but generally we're doing another record," Barrow told the digital radio station.
News of their album plans comes after confirmation the Bristol band will play a tsunami charity show next month.
Potishead will play alongside fellow Bristol band Massive Attack at Oxfam's Tsumani appeal, held at the Bristol Academy on 19 February.
Portishead became an international success and a deeply influential band despite their scant recorded output.

What's going on with these folks? Any News? I went to their official website but it doesn't have any links. Is there a new Portishead album? :(
Pete, tell me you're going to go see this. I would kill you if you didn't.

It was about six months ago... :(
Still no word on whether it actually happened or not.
^ It did happen and the success was such that the played again the 20th.
Apparently, their new album will be finished by the end of this year. Still no release date.

I forgot the URL, but there's a new Beth Gibbons song for the soundtrack of a French film you could hear on the official website. I think it was called "L'annulaire" and I must say that quite satisfied me for the lack of Portishead, it was beautiful.. I really wouldn't mind her continueing solo !
Well, guess who got his (cyber) copy today?
And guess who made MP3s out of it?
And guess who's going to share em with y'all? :e

Oh, and they're going to play in the Coachella Music Festival, in case you didn't know...

They were rumored to play last year, and it didn't happen. I'd be very surprised if they played this year. Where are you getting your information?
Hm. Yeah.
All the websites say it's a rumor until it's confirmed or denied in Feb.
A friend told me and I got all "OMGWTFFF" coz I didn't know it was still a rumor. :P

New Portishead or solo Beth, I'd be happy with either.

Beth is also featured on Jane Birkin her new DVD Rendez-Vous Avec Jane. She is joking around a bit with Jane and sings A Day Like Any Other ( adaptation from Un Jour Comme Un Autre from Serge Gainsbourg ) with her

I hope not. I looooove Victoria's Secret (not the really really hot and skanky lingeree though, damn, i'm a prude ya know?! :r ) but i wouldn't want Portishead in the commercial. Their music IS sensual sounding though... hmmm...I generally get bummed out when really talented musicians sell their music to ads. Unless it's just a fun, silly, goofy kind of song. But then all my associations are ruined. I'll think of a damn bra when i hear "Only You" and that's not what it's meant for! [post94]
they still get played everywhere. i heard "Glory Box" in Lord of War.
