View Full Version : Mothers, what do you know about caesarean sections?

My sister-in-law gives birth this Thursday. The doctors are going to perform a C-section because they think the baby is too big for it to come au natural. From her checkup last week, they're predicting the little one is going to be close to 10 pounds. That's one fat baby.

But anyways, I was curious...even if you have a pre-planned C-section, do they induce labor? Or is it just another surgical procedure where they prep you & cut you open & it's done in an hour or two?

I'm going to be an uncle!! Yay!! ;b

I would assume that inducing labor would be completely unecessary as the baby isn't coming out that way - labor is contractions of the uterus forcing the baby out of the dilated cervix. None of that needs to be happening for a C section.

Congrats!

they can get the baby out in as little as like 15 minutes if they have too - its the sewing back together that takes awhile.

is she really small? 10lbs sounds big but in the world of babies its not that enormous.

it will take her a lot longer to heal. i hope she has a speedy recovery and congratulations!

My mom had a C-section when she had me. No way she was going through another vaginal birth like she had with my brother. Heh heh. :p She said it was pretty easy. I "told" her I was ready at 11 PM and in she went for procedure. They waited a bit and I was out by 2:54 AM. :)

[... This thread also brought to mind Shakespeare's Macbeth and the prophecy that no man of woman born could harm him. Macduff is able to slay Macbeth on a technicality because he "was from his mother's womb untimely ripped." My friends joked that I could have slain Macbeth too. ;)]

my sister-in-law just had a c-section on saturday.

it wasn't planned- she had been induced and she just wasn't dilating- but i definitely don't think it's neccessary.

the baby was 9 pounds and 4 oz, by the way- a big boy. :)

I have a friend who has had two children.. one naturally and one c-section. She said she'd do the c-section all over again because she turned into ground beef in her nether regions due to the natural birth.

Cheesy- Duuudeee two placenta's? Was one inside the other or were they next to each other? Wow.

I was a C-section cos I was a breech baby. My mom had the choice to have me on the 24th or 25th of Feb and she chose the 25th cos that's George Harrison's bday and he was her fave Beatle. Anyway, she was awake the whole time, as you do, and said it was amazingly cool cos she watched the whole thing in the reflection of the doctor's glasses. Pretty nifty eh? ;)

Slug- you mean to tell me you can still SEE it by holding a compact down there? I'd think that tummy would block the view! ;) (aren't you about 7 months now? or am I going nuts?)

I think both have their merits. It's just SO cool that in this day and age, it's almost unheard of for mothers to die giving birth (let me restate- in OUR country and other wealthy countries w/half-ass technology). Don't even get me started on the miracles performed daily w/preemies.
The deal w/C-sects is the healing. She's gonna be sore for a few weeks, but it won't be anything she can't handle. Trust me, after the past two months she's gone through- healing from the C-sect will seem like a breeze! Also, there's a school of thought that says c-sect babies are prettier. (um, during the first week or so! not permanently) The skull doesn't go through the trauma that babies born vaginally do, so usually there is less redness and mishapen-ness (did I just make that word up?)
Good luck Jeff. Don't worry- all will go JUST fine! And congrats on that big nephew of yours!!!!! I'm SOOO glad I never had to carry 10lbs of baby inside me! hehe

they may actually induce her and let her labor for a bit first. the actual process of labor, contracting, etc. is good for the baby and thought to be rather necessary by some doctors. the squeezing of the uterus helps to squeeze some of the mucus etc out of the babies lungs, etc and prepare them for breathing.

there is more risk in c-section births due to the anesthesia, healing, etc. but they are pretty common these days.

i wish her luck and congrats on being an uncle!!:)

So. A c-section is not a big deal. It is an operative procedure, not labour, so they absolutely won't induce it. What they'll do is give Mom what's referred to as an "epimorph" ... epidural anesthaetic combined with a TINY dose of morphine (for post-partum pain management). The anesthaetic acts instantly ... they'll then make an incision about 10-12 cm long and remove the baby and placenta from the uterus. Healing is the most painful part ... here in Canada, they want you walking within about 18 hours of the procedure ... and you go home in 3-4 days, barring complications.

Thanks for all the info guys.

My hat's off to all the mothers out there for what they go through. I personally thought a C sect wasn't necessary but then again, I'm not a doctor & I'm not the one that's carrying the baby.

We all can't wait. We even made the baby an Elvis outfit with matching sequin sunglasses. And if it's a girl, we made Jackie O dresses with matching hats & purses. The purses are so tiny & cute.

I know, we got a little carried away.

My mom had me with a C. She was old for the time (40 almost) and had very high blood pressure and a heart defect (two) she was born with. She said it was easy as pie and she laughed at her sisters who did theirs vaginally cuz they couldn't sit down or pee without crying for like weeks. She's told me if I ever have kids (which I won't) to do a C-section cuz it'll save me lots of headaches (well, snatch-aches). ;)

A friend of mine and a cousin of mine both had C-sections recently (in the last 5 years). You don't have to be put 'under' if you don't want to--they both watched theirs. My cousin's a nurse so she demanded to be awake and with it. They'll use a local instead of a general anestetic if you want--and that reduces risks too because you're not unconscious so there's no chance of you not waking up (like there is with generals). The whole thing can take like 15 minutes and you're left with a little, biddy scar. My friend that had one has a gorgeous body (yes, I'm jealous) and bitches that the only reason she can't wear bikinis now is because of her stretch marks (big and dark) and there's no scar to be found from her C-section.
