First let me say I am THRILLED there is a Kate forum!! whoo-hoO!!
OK, now, about Cloudbusting (m fave Kate song of all time):
I need some help from you all with the lyrics. What is this song ABOUT?? I hear there is a ton of symbolism, but what the symbols stand for is beyond me.
Yo-yo--what is the "yoyo" she hid in the garden, and from the govt?
Why does it glow in the dark?
Who looks too small in their big black cars?
What does the garden symbolize?
What does "I'm cloudbusting, Daddy" mean??
I am totally guessing that the yo-yo symbolizes her feminine power which she is hiding from men, but I have no idea.:t
any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Okay, I don't know these things 4 sure. It's just my interpretation. I think it's a story about a girl whose father is something like a genius... a bit like a mad scientist. Underrated, misunderstood... And he has stumbled upon something big. Some kind of a horrible secret ( I always thought it was about nuclear stuff ). And her yoyo is made of this stuff, that's why it glows in the dark ( "what made it special, made it dangerous, so I burried it" ). And the government is after him ( the man in the big black car ) and they come to take him away ( "I won't forget" ). How you ever seen the video ? It's beautifull and it explains a lot.

_The Book of Dreams_ it's about that.
It's written from a childs point of view or something.
Kate has called it the saddest book she's ever read.
IT's out of print, I think, so I'm sad.
In the story, the boy recounts the special relationship with his father
They have a machine that can make it rain
Father gets carted away at the end.
This is all in the music video I think too...with the rain machine and the father, etc...

The song is really quite simple, it is a straight telling of a true story.
There was this scientist, William Reich (or something), that developed a theory about an energy that's called orogn - which is like life energy. He developed means of detecting, measuring and storing of this energy. He also invented machines that used the energy. one of them was called "cloudbuster" and made rain.
he said that there were things that weren't good for the flow of the energy, one of them was a kind of glowing yoyos which was popular at the time. he made his son throw it away.
this man was accused of fraud by the American goverment, and was arrested for couple of months. he died in prison, leaving a boy behind, a compelling theory, a farm called "organon" in which he conducted his experiments, and some followers.
there is a lot of mystery concerning why was he arrested, and why so many things were taken from his farm by the FBI, and never returned.
His son published a book about his father, which Kate read and based the song around.
