When I first heard this song.. it blew me away! The different parts to it.. the whole middle section leading up to the climax before the air is sucked out at the end.. those harmonies in the background on the second verse that just "ahh ahh ahh ah aaaaahh" higher and higher and than drop out ever so suddenly... this song is just so brilliant. Anyone else feel the same?

I love this song ! Love lyrics - "too many an Aborigine's mistaken for a tree, till you near him on the motorway the tree began to breath". And the animal noises at the end. It really shows how far ahead Kate Bush was of her time.

:t Umm. that's the Dreaming. I love them both. Breathing's my favourite song on NFE besides Army Dreamers. I especially love the live version of Breathing with Kate on piano... makes me want more.

Breathing is one of my all time favourite Kate songs and I love the video as well (despite the cheesy 80s production). Its environmental/no-nukes message was very timely as the cold war was reaching its peak.
hummeri > I love the live version too. It's so powerful.

oooh breathing is the most beautiful song... so haunting, so scary. I'm obsessed with every aspect of that song, especially the weird scary guy with the nuclear bomb stuff... aiiii.

The video gave me a new perspective on the song though...I didn't get the whole womb thing until Kate demonstrated it in the video.
And I loved the nuclear winter dramatization at the end! The color scheme was so wonderful!!!
As for cheesy 80s production - try the video for Sat In Your Lap (dunce roller derby meets satanic ritual - yuck)

I adore this song; it's so dramatic, yet wholly convincing. Her use of the male chorus (as on "Army Dreamers") is especially effective.

Sorry for bringing this back up, but I just re-discovered Breathing! I had never even paid attention to that man's speech towards the end and last night I listened to it on headphones while having the words in front of me and I was actually deeply touched! If you listen carefully to what he says and picture the images of his words you really get the deeper message of the song and then the finale kicks in and it totally blows you away!
I wish I had seen the video though. :(

Oh and it definitely is the best song on the album. Kate does an excellent job when touching on sensitive world issues like that.
And the lyric Chips of plutonium are twinkling in every lung always makes me shiver! :n

this song really is wonderful.
i love the spare but strong drumbeat.
was thinking that the Massive Attack video for Teardrop when the foetus is singing would be a good interpretation if the song was released today

The live version is magnificent !!!!
It's from one of the Secret Policemans' Ball events.
I've seen the video and she is brilliant and the whole theatre just goes crazy when she appears.
Definitely worth tracking down and downloading.

Breathing live is so emotional. For me, it works better than the original. She did it in 86, i think, and it is really fascinating to see her reinterpretation of a song she wrote years before.
