so i am starting this thread to talk about full moons, and what they mean to us, and what we do with them...
there is so much mythology, and i'm sure we could pack this thread full of cool information.

Noelle - what a beautiful thread...
Because I need to think on this...gather a bit of info...I'm gonna wait until tomorrow to post my REAL reply...
I've always had a fascination with the Moon. She means something real to me, and I follow much of what she represents.
I have tons of books about the Moon...history, lore, cycles, etc...
I'll have to get together some fun stuff to share...
By her fertile light,

Here are some ideas from Scott Cunningham's "Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner"
(I like to make my own spells and rites, but this is for ideas, etc...)
Herbs for a full moon ritual or altar setting:
Place upon the altar all nocturnal, white or five-petaled flowers such as the white rose, night-blooming jasmine, carnation, gardenia, cereus, lily, iris; all pleasingly-scented flowers which shall call forth the Goddess. Camphor is also symbolic.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~~*~*~*~*~
THE FULL MOON RITE:
Perform this at night, in view of the Moon if possible. It is appropriate for crescents, white flowers, silver and other lunar symbols to be present on the altar for this ritual. The quartz sphere can be placed on the altar as well. Or, if you prefer, use the cauldron (or a small white or silver bowl) filled with water. Place a piece of silver into the water.
Arrange the altar, light the candles and censer, and cast the Circle of Stones.
Stand before the altar and invoke the Goddess and God, with the Blessing Chant and/or any other invocations.
Now gaze at the Moon, if possible. Feel it's energies sinking into your body. Feel its cool Goddess energy wash you with power and love.
Now say these or similar words:
Wondrous Lady of the Moon
You who greets the dusk with silvered kisses;
Mistress of the night and of all magics,
who rides the clouds in blackened skies
and spills light upon the cold Earth;
O Lunar Goddess,
Crescented-One,
Shadow maker and shadow breaker;
Revealer of mysteries past and present;
Puller of seas and ruler of women;
All-wise Lunar Mother,
I greet Your celestial jewel
at the waxing of its powers
With a rite in Your honor.
I pray by the Moon.
I pray by the Moon.
I pray by the Moon.
Continue chanting "I pray by the Moon" for as long as you will. Visualize the Goddess if you so desire, perhaps as a tall, robus woman wearing silver jewelry and white, rippling, draped clothing. A crescent Moon may rest upon Her brow, or She may toss a glowing silvery white orb in Her hands. She trods the starfield of eternal night in an eternal round with Her lover, the Sun God, spreading moonrays wherever She goes. Her eyes laugh, Her skin is white and translucent. She glows.
Now is the time for magic of all types, for the full Moon marks the height of its powers, and all positive spells cast then are powerful.
Full Moons are also excellent times for meditation, mirror magic, and psychic workings, for such are often more successful within the circle. Crystal-scrying is particularly recommended; flood the crystal with moonlight prior to the ritual. If you have no crystal sphere, use the cauldron filled with water and the piece of silver. Gaze at the water (or at the Moon glinting on the silver) to awaken your psychic awareness.
Lunar liquids such as lemonade, milk or white wine can be consumed during the Simple Feast that follows. Crescent cakes are traditional as well.
Thank the Goddess and God and release the circle.
It is done.

I've got lots of stuff to post, as this is one of my favorite parts of my Path...

This is such a lovely thread!
And I am with Nic....I have always felt a special connection with Mother Moon....but you know what? I think for many women that is not unusual since our menstrual cyles follow the same path that she does....
To me the Moon is about the push and pull of it all....and that is what Mothers do....like gravity they ground you....they give you light in your darkest hour....they keep you focused on the seasons and days gone by....they remind you of your power as a woman....they kiss you with warmth and glowing....they are magic....they wash the shores and souls with the oceans and tears of happiness and strength....so it is definitely a maternal strength as far as I am concerned....
The Moon in many religions and myths represents the female where the Sun represents the male....that of course is only one interpretation....the strongest and most powerful goddesses such as Isis (Egyptian), Hera (Greek), Artemis(Greek) and Cerridwen (Celtic) share the title goddess of the Moon....it is interesting in that this title shows how maternal and strong in female essence the Moon is in different belief systems.
The below picture is one that I believe represents the Moon in goddess form perfectly....it is a painting of Isis and Osiris by Susan Seddon Boulet BUT I sometimes see it as The Moon and Humanity :)

Full Moon Chalice Spell
Two nights before the Full Moon, fill a chalice with
clear spring water and place a solid silver coin at the
bottom of the chalice. Carry the chalice outside and let it stand
with the coin and water in it, and let the light of the goddess
Diana, the Full Moon, shine on the cup. Meditate upon the
abundance coming into the chalice, and feel the energy as you
hold the chalice in your hands. Then, drink the water and feel
the abundance and prosperity enter you as you say:
'Goddess of the Full Moon,
I ask you to grant me
wealth and prosperity,
that I may live in comfort,
and return these gifts to humanity."
After the ritual, keep your coin in a silver lamé pouch.

I didnt want to quote your entire post. But OMG, I saw Isis holding Osiris in your reply. That is the same picture that I have over my altar! I love that pic! It is breathtaking to me. [thats why its over my altar]. Isis and Osiris are my Goddess and God. I have been looking for appropriate Goddess/God figurines for my altar but nothing that suits the true aspect of the Goddess's, "beauty". The figurines on the market today, I dont feel, despict the Goddesses true beauty. The only one I found that I really like, is one that is unobtainable, which came out of King Tuts tomb. It is solid gold and truly depicts the Goddess's beauty. I did find a suitable statue of Isis through a website, but I prefer to wait until I can find one of Her and Osiris to match. :)

BTW You can see the Eye of Horus in Her wings. But just who is that behind her head? I think its Ra.
What do you think?

Isis is one of the Goddesses I focus on, primarily.
My mother has bought me some of the most beautiful jewelry with her on it/in it.
I set up my altar last night to reflect what it would look like for a full moon ritual. I plan to take the ol' digicam home tonight, and upload some pics tomorrow.
I'll also show you guys some of my jewelry...I collect moonstone, and have some wonderful pieces.
*idea for a thread*
I have so much info at home on the Moon - I just don't know where to start...the lore & stories are so long to type...I have info on Moon healing and Moon phases...stories from different cultures...lots of things!
The New Moon falls this Friday - Anyone have any info on a New Moon ritual?

i know what you mean, nic... i have been looking through my "moon" folder on my iMac shadowbook, and geez louise, there is just SO much information i could post... not all full moon centered though... a lot of it is more general than that... maybe we should start a "moon lore" thread... instead of just this full moon thread...
the full moon ceremonies i went to when i was on the rez, were only women there... outside... there would be a fire... sometimes an elder would tell us a legend... there would be a round of prayers... and people would talk to and about grandmother moon... each person would make an offering of a tobacco flag (a square meter of cloth and one end has a knot tied around a wad of tobacco) some people would make offerings for others who couldn't be there... and then all the ladies would burn their families' hair that they had collected that month... that was about it, really.

HEEEY!!! I'm *slowly* uploading the pics I took last night...
I dressed my altar to fit a "Lunar" theme...
I thought you'd like to see it...

I have a few things "working" right now...so, I didn't take everything off of my altar.
My poppet (for Heidi) is still there, as well as a muslin bag/charm for Chris. I have herbs in my cauldron, as well, that I didn't want to take out.
I couldn't find any white flowers, so I made do with some Dusty Miller leaves and a sprig of purple flowers...

The Rose Quartz was a valentine's gift to myself...
Here are some auctions:

Have fun shopping!!!
I had a blast searching for one...The first one I got was the smaller quartz sphere...then, I thought, "Well...I need a BIG hunk of stone!" - So...I bought one.

Full moon is also a wonderful time for making Holy water.
A few days before I go to a very special spot and get a gallon of spring water fresh out of the ground.
The day before full moon I set it out so both the sun and the moon can bless it. The night of the full moon I'll draw my circle and call the elementals. With the ashes from my favorite incense I add the power of air. With the light of a candle fire is added. I add rose water for the water. I also add a combination of dirt from my home and from my favorite hiking spot for earth. I bless it with my own energy. Then I take it to the light of the full moon and ask the Goddesses to bless energize it. I leave it there the whole night. The next day it's done.

Woo! Thanks for the sweet words on my altar!
*Someone* has the same sort of fondness for la Luna as I, eh?
Jeffrey (am I misspelling this?) - I was caught at your prose...
I'm curious - does the Moon represent ALOT of what you base your path on? I'd say She's a MAIN (as in BIG, MUCH, GRANDE) part of my path...

Blue moons happen once in a blue moon. A blue moon occurs when you have two full moons in the same month. The secomd full moon is the blue moon. Blue moons are a time for miracle magic and soul mate magic.
Void of course moons are NOT to be messed with. They occur when the moon is moving between two zodiac signs. It is called "void of course" because there is no specific guiding energy force aligned with the moon during this motion. Check your astrological calendar for exact times. Doing magic during a void of course moon can be treacherous.

*sigh* anyone not</> feel a connection to the moon? Moon magick and symbolism is abundant in the Craft...and I love the moon and everything...but when I go outside and stare and open myself up..I don't feel much. Honestly, I feel more in the sun than in the moon. And while most people attribute the moon to the goddess and the sun to the god, i feel that the sun is less god and more...i don't know--it represents illumination, creativity, life, and clarity to me. Sort of the sexless Matrix of life, if you will. The moon is more mystery, shadows, the hidden, etc for me. Hmm *getting ideas* maybe a good ritual would be to go out under the moon and try to uncover something hidden in your life...I think I will think more on this. Any ideas?

I can completely understand that. I mean let's put it into perspective shall we? The Moon's light is a reflection of the Sun's brilliance and so in my eyes the two work together to shed light and life onto the earth while tending to their own delicious and special purposes. You know I was watching the movie "The Year of Living Dangerously" the other night and there was a passage about how Indonesian gods and goddesses are not one thing or another...they all are of ALL things....and that, to me, is the same with the ideas behind the Sun and the Moon or the God and the Goddess....their agendas are slightly different, but they encompass the whole. And we may feel more of a pull to one than the other...but that is what is so lovely about them....like good parents you can count on each to love you and teach you wholly while going to one or the other for something that may be more specific in need and well suited for each :)
I love your ideas about opening up your inner mysteries to the Moon though...that is a great idea!

Nic, beautiful altar =)
The full moon is definately a huge part of my path also. The moon period -but definately the full moon. I feel more connected to the earth during the full moon than at any other time. It is during this time (for me) that magickal seeds are to be planted, wishes are made & dreams realized. A time of mystery & celebration. It is the most magickal & wonderful time of month for me.
I believe that different people are more magickal at different times of the year & cycles of the moon & I am more magickal during spring & the full moon. Guess a lot of people are, but if you catch me in the springtime during a full moon I swear I glow!
I read something once & I cannot remember where, maybe someone can help me out here, but some women actually lay in their garden during the full moon & bless the fields with their menstruation. Wow. I bet that really makes for some magickal herbs! If only I didnt live in an apartment complex...
Also, some of you might find this interesting...
"The tangible nature of the Moon's energy is indisputable. Ocean tides, spawning fish, earthquakes, and catastrophic weather phenomena have all been studied in direct correlation to the Moon's cyclical temper. Since emotions correspond to the element of water, just as the tides are braced & buffeted by the Moon's influence so too is the human psyche. Research done by psychiatrists, police investigators, and hospitals show dramatic fluctuations in criminal & psychotic behaviors during both the Full & New Moon phases. But effects are not purely negative; heightened psychic & intuitive awareness, precognitive dreams, & enhanced healing & manifestation ability are all gifts of the Moon's watery spirit."

I have very rudimentary knowledge of all of this, but a great amount of interest. I have a great aunt who is one of the few people left of my family I can speak with of these things, because the rest of my family is very very Christian. She always taught me to follow the moon in all I did. She told me that when I was growing my hair to trim it during a full moon. She also would tell me when to have a particular surgery according to the moon phases. She lives by it, in her professional and personal life. Apparently my great grandmother was a healer and knew all kinds of things. She passed it on to her kids but my one great aunt is the only one to pass it on. I'm hoping to learn enough to teach my daughter.

Mermaid,
That is really cool. You should find out as much as you can about your families traditions from your great aunt. Sounds like you are from a long line of healers! Most of us are Im sure, but that is really in the recent past ya know? Very interesting.

You're right. Noone else in may family talks about it much, and it is such a fascinating history from what I've heard. I want to pass it on to my daughter.
Since I don't see my aunt very much anymore, and my grandmother has died, I'm going to start going on the weekends more often. I have made arrangements to see her on Saturday.
Thanks for the perspective!

I am, and have always been, all about the moon! When I was a kid, I used to kneel on my bed and stare out the window for hours at night when I was supposed to be sleeping. I wished on it, talked to it, made up spells, and tried to burn it's image into my brain. As I got older, I would sneak out into the back yard when everyone fell asleep and dance in the moonlight. I almost wreck the car when there's a full moon out and I'm driving home! I practically hide during the day...I hate heat & the sun. Sad, because there should be a balance, but that's the way I feel! Moon=magick to me!

I would be way excited, but I will not pretend, I have not a clue as to the significance of a 'Blue Moon' or a half moon or a full moon (other than I am well aware of odd behavior/different than usual behavior exhibited by creatures on this small planet) or a 'honey moon' ....so may be I need to do some home work.....in fact I know I do. I love the moon, no seriously, I have always felt a strong pull/connection with her and as you can see, make reference to the moon as female in essence. The intellect and expression of most here in the NAP forum is lovely and I truely appreciate being able to share and learn from everyone here. As I have said before here, I am merely in exploration phase right now in life.
OK, gotta rant for a sec, hope y'all don't mind....It is Labor Day and I have to open my store for a partial work day anyways, because I neeeeeed the money, my business is in the crap-pile lately and I don't see any way out. I have tried to make it work for three and a half years now and the overhead is staggering. I'm trying to not blame anyone for the mess I have made of things, I have watched people do that and will not make that sad mistake. If anything possibly I can become a stronger person after all this, as long as I take responsibility for what is mine, good or bad. As y'all can tell I'm feeling a little bit lonely and reflective today, but I have the kids and the man and no matter what happens, I have love.
Hope everybody doesn't mind me whining just a tad. I trust all and everyone is finding themselves grateful for what we do have in our own little world(s').

Hi peoples’, I felt like a total spaz/dork after my last post on this thread. I do not want to become the f***ing-drama sprite here. :) It was just a rough day in a very harsh business, which happens to be, the retail/corporate/government sales of computers: hardware and networking-equipment and service/technical support; just a visual of how many places I have to put myself in and through. My problems are that I lack the skill of organization; I do not have the capital to keep up with my broadening customer base (which should be a good thing); and dislike what I do. I have figured out that much so far, but in some ways coming to those conclusions have only made things more ‘grrrrrrrrrrrr!’
I suppose, a few thoughts out there for clarity and clear vision through this time would be nice. I realize that ultimately it is I, who must either make things work or not…decide to fail or not or may be it is just not in the cards to ‘be’?. I am just at an extreme low and have been there for awhile, but I still keep trying. I dunno guys… Thanks Tirgana and Rachel …Everyone for your concern appreciate.
Peace,
shea

Well first of all you were not a spaz or dork for venting Shea....you know this board is about spirituality and sharing things about our lives whether it is about "organic gardening", "hidden agendas", "faeries", you know? We need to talk about the positive and negative aspects of our lives to people who we think can give us a little lift or some advice...and this is the place to do it....do you think you are some kind of perfect goddess who never has a problem or needs to purge her frustrations? Geez...talking about pressure huh? Even the gods and goddesses purge...and boy when they purge....they PURGE! hahahaha!
Now....I think the key is that you are not happy with what you are doing....and if you are not happy then you are not going to really be committed to doing your absolute best or investing all of your energy. Maybe you should really think about a career change....think about what you would really like to do and how to go about getting there. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it....I truly believe that.
Now....get some tea and candles and take a nice warm bath....then get some ice cream and just treat yourself with some warmth and kindness....then commit yourself to do some good solid thinking for the next week about what you really want out of your professional life. Sounds to me as though you have the support of your family to back you up :)
