Hi.

I see that you have happened upon this quaint blog of mine.

I understand your trepidation; it is not often that a cuttlefish blogs, and it is even rarer to find a blog authored by a genuine cuddlefish. Our lives are full of sorrow; it seems like the world would rather cuttle than cuddle.

But that is a story for another day.

Allow me to start at the beginning.

I began my new career barely six months ago. I was hired by NASA and sent to work in their facility at Las Cruces. It was grueling work; my coworkers would demand a correctly delimited simulation output, but you have to understand something, dear reader.

I am a cuddlefish. That is what I am, and that is what I do.

I was under the impression that NASA hired me because they liked me, because they felt NASA needed cuddles. I am not a skinny intern trying to finish my CS degree.

I am just a cuddlefish. All I can offer is cuddles. I'm very good at it, I promise.

But NASA had different plans for me.

I shall post more if you're interested, dear Internet. And if not, well...

Just find me if you need a cuddle.

Past few days I've been working on a php class.
Mind you, I mostly only dabble in php - but this (to me anyway) is worth it.

Content Security Policy is a recommendation from the Mozilla development community.

I really really *really* really like the idea. Right now, other than a non fully functional demo addon to FireFox - no browser implements it.

What my php class does (or is suppose to do anyway) is implement it server side - so that the parts of a page that would violate a stated CSP get yanked out of the page before it is even sent.

Here's my class:

http://homepage.mac.com/mpeters/misc..._class.php.txt

It uses DOMDocument to manipulate the page. Since html/xhtml is structured data, using a tool designed to work on structured data makes a lot more sense than trying to use regex on a plain text file, especially you can break all kinds of things with a plain text file (IE crappy html with tags that aren't closed, elements that have the wrong closing tag, yada yada).

A downside to the class is the document has to be complete before any of the document is sent to the browser. Many php apps use print, echo, and close their php tags to output direct html with inline php snippets etc.

I hate that practice, but it's what a lot of people do. Me - I think the page should be fully built before a single header (except maybe a session cookie) is ever sent.

Anyway, if you've got your html (or xhtml) to use my class you have to first load it into a DOMDocument object. Then start a new instance of my class, define your policy, and ask the class to enforce it. I won't go through the gory details, but not that much is involved.

In my preliminary testing (I need to do much more adequate testing) it actually works quite well. One major bug with xml namespaces, hopefully that won't be too difficult to fix.

I think there are some places in the class that could be done better, but anyway, it's been fun and an incedible learning experience.

A few days ago I went down to Turtle Bay. Well, not Turtle Bay itself, the meadow they have right across from the Sundial bridge.

I went looking for Mountain Garter Snakes (Thamnophis elegans elegans) and Western Toads (Bufo boreas) - I found my first toad of the season about a week ago, but I've never found one in this particular meadow. Toads are declining here, I'm not sure why but I personally suspect it is a side effect of all the mosquito fish the health department dumps in any standing water they can find (we've had a few human and several horse deaths from West Nile Virus). These fish do eat mosquito larvae, but they prefer tadpoles.

Anyway, I did find either species that day, but when walking through the meadow, it continually struck me how similar this habitat was to California Red-legged Frog (Rana draytonii) habitat in Marin County.

That made me a little sad, because the California Red-legged Frog is probably extinct here in Shasta County. They did a fairly extensive survey in 2006 and 2007 in the Cottonwood Creek watershed which did not turn up a single specimen.

There are probably several factors, but the biggest two are probably the Shasta Dam and the introduction of the American Bullfrog (Rana catesbiena). Note that is opinion, not fact. The Shasta Dam tamed the Sacramento River, so it no longer floods. Periodic flooding may have provided some swampland the frog used. The Bullfrog unfortunately likes the same kind of habitat, and tends to eat other species into extirpation when it becomes established, so remaining localities for the frog were taken over by Bullfrogs.

I still have hope though, and I'm still keeping an eye and ear out for a remnant California Red-Legged Frog population here in Shasta County. Maybe I'll get lucky and find one.

There was however one highlight of the day - I saw a Bald Eagle, I heard it take off from a tree and was fairly close to it. I know they breed up at the lake - but I had never seen one in Redding itself before. That was kind of cool.

As some of you may know, Comcast has their modems setup so you can only connect X number of computers at a time. Additional IP addresses are easy enough to come by, but you have to call them and have them come "activate" the IP address(es). I decided to try something else:

I have an old Netgear Prosafe VPN Firewall (Firewall) that I thought didn't work because every time I plugged it into the network, it would stop all Internet traffic. Anywho, I plugged the Firewall into the Comcast modem and all the computers into the ports on the Firewall. I then set the IP address and Default Gateway address for the Firewall statically to what the primary computer was set to and spoofed the Mac address of the same computer tricking the Comcast modem into thinking that the Firewall *was* the primary computer. Then, like magic, all 7 computers were able to access the Internet.

I got off the train in Amsterdam, and ran up the stairs towards the main hall, and from the main hall to the tram. I do this everyday, running for the tram in Amsterdam, because I’m always late and the transfer is really tight. On top of that, the tram always leaves too early, because there is a clock next to it which runs early. I’ve often thought of writing a letter to the tram company about their early clock, but fuck, who cares.

Today however, I was very early (like the clock), because of an important teleconference I had to attend to. I was way on time today. Still, I ran, out of habit. However, my Redwings didn’t carry me fast enough, the tram was already moving as I got closer.
“Momma keep your head down
Momma it wasn't my bullet”
Then I started fantasizing about…what if I had this REALLY big gun, and what if I could hit the tram driver with it from this distance? I would kick the body out and drive the tram myself, on time, not one silly minute too early.
“You can’t just go around killing people!” (- Ricci in Monster)
“Says who?” (- Theron in Monster)
Yeah, but it wasn’t my bullet. Seriously. I would never kill random tram drivers. If I was an American psycho (who is Dutch, but, anyway), I would kill…well, maybe Bush, or train passengers who annoy me, but I guess I would still not kill anybody.

The next tram wasn’t half bad. The driver was a grumpy muslim woman who asked for my destination three times, and drove me right through Amsterdam, very unsafely, as you would expect from a city like this.
“don't take me back to the range
i'm just comin out of the cell in my brain!”
All neat Amsterdam houses which are about to fall over, returns my violent thoughts back to peace and teleconferences.

As he was eating and in general ok he advised that I gave it a week to see how he was as he probllay missed me and lost the weight through fret! He has been a little quite this week but was eating and seemed to be putting the weight back on until tonight I found him weeing on my bed (very unlike him) so picked him up and put him in his litter tray, he got out right away and cowered he then whent limp very unlike my cat then couldnt walk, so I called the vet on the out of hours number the vet told me to come right away.... I drove to the vets and as soon as he examined him he could see that he had a cancerouse tumer in his tummy and said that there was nothing that we could do and that the kindest thing to do was to let him go to sleep!!!! This was a great shock to my system.... I have just got home and I can t stop crying things are so dfferent wthout him and I really didnt expect this [blue]
