This is probably the greates interview ever done with Ross, and it was done on a website that primarily covers movies (aint-it-cool-news.com). In it Ross talks on everything from Stan Lee, to the future of comics, to his Earth X short film, to his almost involvement on SPIDER-MAN the movie.

its a shame that they will prolly never use any of alex's stuff on the movie. at first when i saw the pic you posted of spidey i was taken aback a bit. but after i read the interveiw it made more sense. of course his eyes should be a solid black with reflective light on them. and the costume really grows on ya after you veiw it a few times. green goblin, who might be played by....kevin costner...ummmm yeah...should look as close the comic book as possible in my opinion. and lawrence fishburne has been asked to play doc octopus...im sorry dont get me wrong im not racist but why does hollywood feel the need to change iconic figures of comic books to fit a more politically correct ideal? maybe its not that big a deal but these are characters i grew up with and have a certain image in my minds eye of what they should look like. it would be like tom hanks playing tupac shakur in a movie of his life. sure hanks is a great actor but.......
bottom line... they are going to royally fuck this movie over in a major hollywood way. sam raini as director? ack!!!! he wants spidey to have organic spider webs that shoot from his wrist instead of having peter parker build web shooters!!!! thats not a good idea. bad bad bad.
this movie has been trying to get made for so long i think that the original ideals of what this movie would mean to so many fans is lost in what would be most like the matrix. james cameron should do the movie like originally planned but he has become an ego-maniac since that movie he made which i cant bring myself to name.lol. and has forgotten about spidey. actually its more like he got sick of all the b.s. involved over legal litigations over the rights to the movie and dropped out but at least he is making another terminator...yay?
well thats my rant which wasnt meant to be a rant but ended up a rant. im starting wonder if theres anything i like about comics.lol. im joking just seeems like theres more to complain about these days than there is to applaud.
thank you crispy for posting the url and pic. the article kicked ass and finally ross was able to say what he wanted instead of only what he could. he is one of my favorite artist and i strive to draw like him but he bastard has major talent dammit.

wasn't that a FUCKING great interview, preacher!

i loved how he let loose on frank miller and stan lee, those money grubbing hypocrites! at first i was excited about a sequel to DARK KNIGHT but what Ross said made absolute sense. that story is the end chapter and Miller (whose work I love but his last few SIN CITY arcs have been shit on paper) is doing it for $$$.

as for the SPIDEY flick, the webs being organic were actually James Cameron's idea! in the scriptment he turned in 5 or so years ago Spidey had organic webs. i'm pretty sure that the basis for Raimi's movie is the Cameron scriptment. so chalk that fault up to JC not SR.

i've heard the rumors about kostner but not fishburne.
i didn't grow up with Spidey like you preach (I came on with the McFarlane era and left not too soon after) so the idea of fishburne doesn't bother me that much (not as much as kostner, anyway). and i'm a die-hard Raimi fan so i'm really hopeful for the flick. just look at all the worrying peeps were doing about X-MEN and how good it turned out. i think Raimi can combine the right amount of, camp, heart, and action a character like Spidey requires.

sam raimi does have a great sense of film campiness but i think id rather see a more serious side of spidey not just one liner laden script that would be just like watching the old spidey cartoon when he had iceman and that fire chick as side kicks. i wouldnt want to see tim burton do it though which had been aproached to do. that would be way to dark although i think his version of superman would have been interesting. i think after all the waiting we have had to endure over this film we deserve a first class director, writer and actors. what about speilberg or lucas? or even john wu for action scenes and brian singer as a writer? spiderman is an world wide icon as much as superman and doesnt deserve to be seen like the superman movies.
laurence fishburne is an awesome actor but is only being considered for doc ock becuase of the matrix and is a hot item of the moment and spidey has never had a prominant black foe. great actor for all the wrong reasons. kevin costner i actually dont have a problem with because he can act and he does movies that are far beyond the audience that appeals to him. but his part will only fly if he plays the original green goblin.
what i wanna see in this movie is an already established spiderman character with no cliche origin intro which will take up way to much time in a movie. like in batman he was already fighting crime and we werent bored with wathcing him fit into his new found role as a crime fighter. of course flash backs of the reason how peter parker became spider man is unavoidable because there may be the one or two people who dont know how he became who he is.
i dont wanna see mary jane watson as his love interst but gwen stacey who will be killed by the green goblin as spidey is helpless to do anything which in turn makes spidey a villian in the eyes of her father the commishoner.
doc ock will be a scientist who was above peter parker and witnessed the accidnet that turned him into the super powered being and will try to replicate the process but screws it up and is fused with the four giant arms and blames spidey and wants to disect spidey to gain the knowledge of the process. and then theirs doctor conner who will make his appearance at the end as the lizard. conner was working for doc ock and loses his arm in the accident that creates doc's arms. conner in turn develops a serum to grow his arm back but because of the reptile dna he uses becomes the lizard and whose only instint is revenge on the man who "created" him, doc ock. but spidey unknowingly gets in the way. thats waht i wanna see dammit.

sounds like you have a very specific vision for SPIDEY on celluloid, preach, and won't be satisfied w/ anything less.

i however am looking for an action romp w/ a lot of momentum coupled w/ a coming of age story. i have to disagree with the need to focus on his origin, too. wheras Batman's origin was a decision made on his part, Spide never had a choice. Batman's decision to become a superhero came from years of planning and training, wheras Peter parker became one overnight. not only that he was a teenager when it all happened. the first film should be full of him making mistakes and trying to live the life of a normal teen w/ extrodinary powers and in the end realize that great power holds great responsibility shtuff. but if Raimi and crew decide to go with an older Spidey, so be it. i just hope it's good enough to justify a sequel and give all us comic geeks what we really want: VENOM!

but that would such a cliche for such an establshed character in my veiw. one of the reasons the x men was a good movie, not great in my eyes but thats another thread lol, was because it started in mid stream and introduced characters to the fold. in the seventies they made a few spidey movies and were bad bad bad movies i dont think they were ever in the theatres its beens years since i saw them but they rehashed the origin. im not saying it would be totally bad movie if they did do that but to many movies do the "bumbling hero trying to fit into his new role" plot. i would just like to see an established universe in the movie. where there are heroes and villians. if your a fan of the books and the marvel universe then you know that there are other hereos and villians and thats the world spidey lives in and if your not a fan and no nothing about such things as marvel comics than your seeing all these incredible, imaginative and fresh characters.
all in all i dont want to see something ive seen a hundred times before but with different characters. and i dont want to see this movie fucked up by hollywood. they should just hire alex ross as technical advisory for the movie. that would make all the difference in the world. it just seems like anyone in any kind of position to make movies about comics has no sense of waht the movie should really be about. it would be like me making a movie about tennis, i have no idea about anything to do with tennis, it would be a terrible movie. doesnt anyone in hollywood read comics?
but...then again todd mcfarlane is obviously an man of comics and he let the spawn movie become a peice of alley dwelling trash which he later did in the comics.lol.
dont get me wrong crispy everyone has there own taste in movies and what they wanna see and im not trying to bash your ideals we just both know what we wanna see and htey may not be the same movie and at the end of the day we will have to except what ever they slap together in hollywood.

right on with the SPAWN movie being a steaming pile of horsepoop. my friend Rob & I were psyched for almost a year about that movie. then we saw it.

exactly... went into the movie pumped up for a kick ass movie...i came out with a false sense of security in my own feelings on the movie. they totally alienated any chances of a reasonable sequel that would pertain to the time line of the movie. i would have not let wanda and terry find out who spawn was, let jason win die, and i would have ended it with the clown using the knife to slice spawns face open and then spawn kicking the violaters ass and saving his former wife and her family from unknowingly getting killed. have the whole plot take place without them knowing that their life is in danger adding to the element of anticipation over what is taking place. last scene would have been spawn on top of a cathederal and the camera panning up and around him until it passes over his newly stiched up face, perfectly coinciding with the comic at the time because spawn was sporting a shoe lace stitch job for a long time after batman, yes batman, sunk a batarang in his face, then in the sequel his entire face could get ripped off and expose his new comic book face. i had a lot more planned out but i cant remeber it right now. i do that alot plot out how a movie should be.
