I just remember now that I really loved it, but now I've kinda forgotten the specificis of why-o i need to go back and re-read it. *spoilers ahead, but they're not like plot spoilers, or any knowledge that would spoil the reading of the book, at least, I think not* I remember I really liked the part where the main character (o gosh I forgot her name the Wicked Witch--well there goes my memory for you, I know it begins with an M) is at her college and is helping the animal professor with his stuff and she learns all about the myths--these stories that tried to tell how the animals were inferior to humans. And there was a part where a Goddess made a flood by her urine which baptized the animals somehow (ok well the book isn't all that odd, you have to read it to understand). Anyways, whenever I hear Tori's song, Yes Anastasia, and the part "Is she still pissing in the river now?" I'm reminded of this book. __________________ Ami Amour's My Space | | | 02-15-2004, 11:32 PM | #7 | | got the night on my side Join Date: Jul 2001 Posts: 4,529 | Quote: | Originally Posted by Toriem I remember I really liked the part where the main character (o gosh I forgot her name the Wicked Witch--well there goes my memory for you, I know it begins with an M) | Her name is Elphaba. Emphasis on the first syllable. (Maguire fashioned after L. Frank Baum's initials - L.F.B. - ELphaba. Get it? Now you'll never forget it.) I just finished the book a few weeks ago. I can't believe how long it took me! I agree with Cheesy that the book went way too much into the politics of Oz. I wasn't digging that at all. I loved the entire part that took place at Shiz University, but everything else was so-so. And I think Glinda was way fun! I saw the musical recently, too, and a *lot* was changed from the book. A lot. Mostly things were for staging (they made Nessarose's disability a little easier for the actress to deal with, for example.) Then there were plot and character changes, which I think worked brilliantly because it kept the entire feel of the book, while adding classic elements of Oz that just weren't in the book - but should've been. It was absolutely amazifying. | | | 02-16-2004, 12:49 AM | #8 | | there's a haunting here Join Date: Oct 2000 Posts: 28,206 | Quote: | Originally Posted by leirali I just finished the book a few weeks ago. I am still really enjoying it though Dying to see the musical xo Rachel | | | 03-07-2004, 05:33 AM | #9 | | Salted Sabine Crackers Join Date: Dec 2003 Posts: 92 | I loved this book!! It made me cry. His Confessions of a Wicked Stepsister wasn't as good. Has anyone read his latest...something to do with Scrouge? Also has anyone seen the Musical Wicked? I saw it and liked it even though it didn' t stick with the book story line - but I'm a sucker for musicals. | | | 03-07-2004, 08:53 PM | #10 | | got the night on my side Join Date: Jul 2001 Posts: 4,529 | Gregory Maguire's latest is called "Mirror, Mirror" and it's about Snow White. I haven't picked that one up yet. "Lost" is the one about Scrooge that came out a couple years ago. He's really whippin' those books out! I saw the musical, and gave my thinkies above. | | | 03-08-2004, 03:10 AM | #11 | | Salted Sabine Crackers Join Date: Dec 2003 Posts: 92 | Quote: | Originally Posted by leirali Gregory Maguire's latest is called "Mirror, Mirror" and it's about Snow White. Five of the thirteen songs were inspired by Gregory Maguire's brilliant novel Wicked -- The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West." Love the book. Haven't heard any of Hannah's stuff, but she seems to be extremely well loved over at Ectoguide. | | | 12-29-2005, 09:32 AM | #13 | | there's a haunting here Join Date: Oct 2000 Posts: 28,206 | ^I love Hannah Fury and did not know that! I have to say I liked Wicked best, with Confessions a close second. I heard tell he has a new one out too, Son of a Witch: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/006...books&v=glance And I did see the musical--it was spectacular. A good show and surprisingly funny. | | | 01-09-2006, 05:16 AM | #15 | | Secret Agent Join Date: Dec 2005 Posts: 28 | My girlfriend and I bought Wicked and Confessions... She's reading Wicked and I'm reading Confessions. We read at a somewhat similar pace, so we'll switch when we're both done. I didn't know of "Lost", but I'll definitely remember next time we go to Barnes&Noble. It's been a very enjoyable book so far~ | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | All times are GMT -4.
