I was on the train the other day and a bunch of teenagers came in, there must've been ten of them, who were all wearing metallica shirts and chattering away in some freaky deaky langauage that I had never heard. and you hear just about everything on the subway, but this was something altogether different. So I took off my headphones, and just sat there listening. At first I thought it was Dutch cuz of all the weird, clearing out you throat 'ghh' and 'chh' sounds, but usually with Dutch since it's similar to English you can pick up little words here and there. There was none of that. So then I thought maybe it's a Slavic language...but no, too many vowels. It sounded nothing like a Romance language. then i thought maybe it was albanian or hungarian or something.

I wound up going up to them and asked what they were speaking. (And they were very nice actually. I'd thought they'd tell me to fuck off cuz they were all boozed out of their minds and on their way to a concert. ) So it was Maltese they were speaking. What are the odds? Who the fuck speaks Maltese?

Hah.

I've never heard Maltese. I didn't even know they had a language, I assumed they spoke something from the surrounding countries O_o It sounds interesting, historically.

But I think Italian sounds simply splendid, as well Swedish, when spoken by certain people I wish I didn't understand portuguese so I could hear what it sounds like to a foreign ear, but people tell me it's nice.

Meanwhile, Norwegian and Finnish (well, agglutinative languages in general) sound really nasty. Norwegian sounds funny, really, but Finnish and Hungarian? Horrid.

Edit: Devnull, you're the only other person I know who thinkks Japanese sounds good. My mother used to berate me when I took it. "WHY are you learning these ghastly noises!?"

i LOVE the sound of it. seriously... i've actually followed people speaking it in public to keep listening. !!!

but the most beautiful language experience i've ever had was in portugal -- my gf and i stopped in a giant monastery while they were having a service. and there were all these little choirboys singing mass, but in portuguese instead of latin. the acoustics of the cathedral, plus the yumm sound of a choir, plus portuguese sounds (i love the mushy sh's and zzh's sdlaksdlaksdflksfda) made me about cream my panties.

btw -- how many languages do you know? i'm really impressed!

everybody always says the most beautiful languages are french, italian, spanish, portuguese or some other romantic language. the ugliest languages are always german, russian, any language spoken in eastern europe, chinese, korean, vietnamese. but JAPANESE is a beautiful asian language.

I think Catalan is purty. I haven't heard Provençal, but I'm sure it sounds nice too.

I think the ugliest by far is Cantonese. It's gutteral and just nasty. They always seem to be screaming.
