I'm sorta Poped out at this point, but who can resist a high requiem mass in Latin? I can't! The Litany of Saints and random Eastern-Rite clergy chanting in Greek at the end were the best parts. Bush looked completely dumbfounded. Condoleezza wore a black veil a la Jackie O around her gigantic, evil supergenius cranium. I saw Yushchenko, Annan, Prince Charles, Bill Clinton, Chirac. The Iranian and Syrian presidents both shook hands with the Israeli president during the peace-of-Christ part of the mass. It's a Popestock miracle! You can read along with the official missal here in Latin and Italian. Here's the litany of the saints: Quote: Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro eo Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for him Sancta Maria, Mater Ecclesiæ, ora pro eo Holy Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for him Sancta Maria, Salus populi Romani, ora pro eo Holy Mary, Protectress of the Roman people, pray for him Sancti Michael, Gabriel et Raphael, orate pro eo Omnes sancti Angeli, orate pro eo Sancte Ioseph, ora pro eo Sancte Ioannes Baptista, ora pro eo Omnes Sancti Patriarchæ et Prophetæ, orate pro eo Sancti Petre et Paule, orate pro eo Sancte Andrea, ora pro eo Sancti Ioannes et Iacobe, orate pro eo Sancte Thoma, ora pro eo Sancte Matthæe, ora pro eo Sancte Matthia, ora pro eo Sancte Luca, ora pro eo Sancte Marce, ora pro eo Omnes Sancti Apostoli et Evangelistæ, orate pro eo Sancte Barnaba, ora pro eo Sancta Maria Magdalena [*gasp* he must've listened to Beekeeper! No seriously, I always thought it was beautiful to watch the priests do high mass in Latin and was just always awestruck by the amount of pomp and circumstance in mass. | | | 04-08-2005, 06:59 PM | #4 | | OBEY! It sounds like a great, beautiful, novel idea until you actually have to sit through one. | | | 04-08-2005, 07:08 PM | #5 | | make a little birdhouse in yr soul Join Date: Dec 2001 Posts: 11,553 | I think Greek and other services in the Eastern Orthodox churches are much prettier, actually. But the Latin is better than the vernacular mass...that stale, protestantized cooking demonstration. That's one area where I agree with Mel Gibson. | | | 04-08-2005, 07:11 PM | #6 | | mani@c Join Date: Jul 2001 Posts: 23,106 | I like high mass in Latin. | | | 04-08-2005, 07:27 PM | #7 | | "You're Drunk! - You're HIGH!" Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow, what you need is someone strong to use you.. like me, like me. If you want to get your soul to heaven, trust in me .Don't judge or question. You are broken now, but faith can heal you. Just do everything I tell you to do. Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow. Let me lay my holy hand upon you. My Gods will becomes me. When he speaks out, he speaks through me. He has needs like I do. We both want to rape you. Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life. Open my eyes and blind me with your light and your lies............ And the angel of the lord came unto me, snatching me up from my place of slumber. And took me on high, and higher still until we moved to the spaces betwixt the air itself. And he brought me into a vast farmlands of our own midwest. And as we descended, cries of impending doom rose from the soil. One thousand, nay a million voices full of fear. And terror possesed me then. And I begged, "Angel of the Lord, what are these tortured screams?" And the angel said unto me, "These are the cries of the carrots, the cries of the carrots! You see, Reverend Maynard, tomorrow is harvest day and to them it is the holocaust." And I sprang from my slumber drenched in sweat like the tears of one million terrified brothers and roared, "Hear me now, I have seen the light! They have a consciousness, they have a life, they have a soul! Damn you! Let the rabbits wear glasses! Save our brothers!" Can I get an amen? Can I get a hallelujah? Thank you Jesus. Growing up, though, all of the masses were in Latin (at my Catholic school in Toledo, OH). I hated it. Now? Not so much the hate. Especially on holidays (again, for me). | | | 04-08-2005, 09:00 PM | #11 | | make a little birdhouse in yr soul Join Date: Dec 2001 Posts: 11,553 | They should at least have the prayers, incantations, and songs in Latin. I see no point and find it downright silly to sing, in English, "Hosanna in the highest." | | | 04-08-2005, 09:05 PM | #12 | | OBEY! OBEY! You would love it. | | | 04-08-2005, 09:33 PM | #13 | | make a little birdhouse in yr soul Join Date: Dec 2001 Posts: 11,553 | I usually only go to church when family brings me along. I always feel more than a bit out of place whenever the Credo comes around, though. | | | 04-08-2005, 10:52 PM | #14 | | there's a haunting here Join Date: Oct 2000 Posts: 28,206 | Quote: | Originally Posted by Stupid Girl I always thought it was beautiful to watch the priests do high mass in Latin | Quote: | Originally Posted by sugarbritches I like high mass in Latin. | I tried so hard to look for it, but I cannot find it. Does anyone else remember that scene in Johnny Dangerously when the priest is saying that parodied Latin blessing over Johnny while he is walking deathrow and collecting machine gun parts from the prisoners? It is SO hilarious. If anyone can find it I would be most appreciative xo Rachel | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | All times are GMT -4.
