does anybody else think Sonic Youth is crappy?

I mean, I know some of you people here like them, but I think they're just horrible. One of my friends likes them - they're her second favorite band (after radiohead which is all fine with me but I just can't stand Sonic Youth. Anybody here with me??????????

It depends on which Sonic Youth you mean. I don't like when it is all noise. But records like Goo and Dirty..I like a lot.

well, that's why I don't like them - cuz I think it's just noise. i sampled Experimental Jet Set Trash No Star (i think that's the whole title) and thought it was really bad. my friend made a tape for my sister which had stuff from Goo and Dirty and i didn't like it. although, there is a song - Wish Fulfillment - which is OK

When they're good like Dirty and Goo, they are very, very good but when they're bad they're absolutely terrible. Plus I just hate the way they are treated like these beyond cool demi-gods. They're all meant to be like uber-hip or something. It's a bit pretentious.

Shit I thought I was the only person on the planet that didn't like them either. I think you have to be majorly fucked up to listen to a lot of their stuff. But I always hear bands saying how influential SY was on them, and it always blew my mind.

Hearing Kim Gordon singing Halloween...this works for me. She is so trashy. Her voice is trashy and her bass playing is just so nasty and trashy. I love it.

Last year, I saw them in Seattle at Bumbershooot and it was terrible. It was all noise..they did not play one song. At the end, Kim got out this trumpet and was blowing into it really hard and then rubbing it on her guitar strings. It was awful. I later found out, that the night before that show, someone broke into their van and stole a bunch of their custom stuff so they were pissed...so we got a horrible show.

...i absolutly LOVE Sonic Youth. In my opinion they're just brilliant. You should listen to 'Bull in The Heather' from the 'Experimental Jet Set, Trah and no star' album, it's such an amazing song. Kim's voice is incredibly sexy, I could just listen to it for hours... She's also incredible on 'Drunken Butterfly', that's the song that made me fall in love with SY. (from 'Dirty')
I've seen SY twice so far, and the first time sucked, 'cause the sound was terrible, and Kim's voice wasn't completely 'healty', but the second time...WOW. Without a doubt one of the best shows I've ever seen.
